Eastern Washington Soccer Shuts Out Nevada

Alexis Stephenson scored two goals and had one assist en route to a 4-0 victory at home

CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team topped Nevada 4-0 today (Sept. 15) in its third straight home match. With this win, EWU improves to 5-4-0 on the year while Nevada falls 1-6-0.

"The kids trained hard this week and we had some ups and downs in this nonconference portion of the schedule, but the ability is there," head coach Chad Bodnar said. "The shots were there and some of it was composure in front of the goal and people flooding the box to get some scrappy goals."

In the first half, Eastern came out aggressive as the Eagles had three corner kicks in 13 minutes.

In the 29th minute, junior Alexis Stephenson scored the first goal to put EWU on the scoreboard up 1-0. The junior caught a cross from M'Kenna Hayes that was deflected by the Nevada goalkeeper in the right side of the box and put it behind the net.

In the 32nd minute, Stephenson was fouled in the box to set up junior Jenny Chavez for a penalty kick. Chavez netted the goal in the right side of the net, putting Eastern up 2-0.

EWU entered halftime with a lead of 2-0 and outshooting the Wolf Pack 5-2.

In the second half, senior Aimie Inthoulay took the first shot on goal that was blocked in the 49th minute. In the 53rd minute, redshirt senior Delaney Romero took a pass from Stephenson from the left side of the box and notched it past the goalkeeper Lauryn Horstdaniel to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Eastern Washington kept putting on the pressure as Stephenson scored another goal, her second of the game, with a shot from the far right that bounced off the keeper to give Eastern a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute.

Senior Savannah Hoekstra followed that by another shot in the 60th minute, but Horstdaniel was there to stop it for Nevada. Allison Raniere also took a shot on goal in the 70th minute but had a save from goalkeeper Jamie Flynn.

At the end of the contest, EWU held Nevada to only three shots and outshot the team 17-3. The Eagles took six shots on goal while the Wolf Pack took one. Eastern also led in corner kicks, having six to Nevada's one.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsee Winston earned her first true shutout at home and improved her record to 2-2-0.

"Our result was good today because the kids had to breakdown a team that sat in deep in the first half and we finished with some good goals," Bodnar added.
