Eastern Washington Soccer Shuts Out Northern Arizona at Home

The Eagles defeat the Lumberjacks 4-0 in their first conference win of the year

CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team defeated Northern Arizona 4-0 today (Sept. 24). The Eagles are now 7-4-1 and on the year and NAU falls 6-5-0.

"I thought overall this was a good weekend for us," head coach Chad Bodnar said. "We went against two good teams and today we saw what we are capable of doing. We have seen bits and pieces of it throughout the season but I think we saw  a 90-minute effort today. We defended well and finished with some good goals. "

It took the Eagles less than 20 minutes to find a rhythm as senior Chloe Williams scored the first goal for the Eagles after dribbling from the left side of the box and around the goalie to put EWU in a 1-0 lead. This marked Williams' 37th career goal and pushed her to sole possession of second place in the Big Sky All-Time goals behind Amanda Ellensworth from Idaho State (2011-14) who holds the record with 39.

Eastern increased its lead to 2-0 when Savannah Hoekstra dribbled from outside the box and passed it to senior Delaney Romero who was able to notch it into the upper 90.

The Eagles went into halftime up 2-0, while also outshooting NAU 8-2.

EWU came out still hot in the second half as junior Aimie Inthoulay scored within 11 minutes following an assist by Devan Talley, putting the Eagles in a 3-0 lead.

In the 78th minute, Inthoulay returned the favor when she bicycle kicked the ball into the box and found Talley, who headed the ball into the net to extend Eastern's lead to 4-0 over the Lumberjacks.

EWU was able to outshoot Northern Arizona 16-5, making Eastern outshoot every opponent so far this season. Ten of the 16 shots from Eastern Washington were on goal while the Lumberjacks only had one.

Senior Emily Busselman was in net for the Eagles and had one save while Meghan Dickmann made six saves for NAU.

"I thought we started the match really well and the effort level was high from the beginning. When we start that way, we end with a good result," Bodnar added. "We have a lot of weapons and a lot of players that are talented and can score goals."

Bodnar Bites
On earning a win in the Big Sky Conference: Whether you win 1-0 or 4-0, it puts one in the win column for us which is where we want to be. We want to be at the top of the conference. We are capable but we just need to come out and play with that kind of intensity and that kind of effort we had today. For us it is one win and we could very well see that team down the road. We are going to take a lot of positives out of today but I think we have been building towards this kind of performance with the group. They are starting to click and it is a good time to click.

What's Next
The Eagles close out their seven game home stand against Southern Utah on Oct. 1 at noon. EWU then travels to North Dakota and Northern Colorado to continue Big Sky competition before returning home on Oct. 13 to play Portland State. All home games are complimentary to the public.
