Eagles Shutout Northern Arizona on the Road, 1-0

Jenny Chavez's lone goal helped EWU snap Northern Arizona's Big Sky unbeaten record

Box Score CHENEY, Wash.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team played the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks to a victory of 1-0 today (Oct. 19) in Flagstaff, Ariz. The win handed Northern Arizona its first loss of Big Sky Conference play this season and helped keep EWU's tournament hopes alive.

"We are very proud of our team for a complete performance on the road against a good opponent," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "It's a great start to the weekend but we have a lot of work left to do on this trip. Collectively, we played well and really gritted through a tough win. It's nice to have a full group back and to see our team starting to gel at the most important time of the year."

The Eagles took the first shot in the 13th minute of play from sophomore Emma Vanderhyden but her shot was blocked.

NAU's Mel-Te Coco took the Lumberjacks' first shot of the match in the 16th minute but her shot sailed wide. Another NAU shot came from Kayla Terhune after 26 minutes of play but the shot was saved by EWU's goalkeeper Kelsee Winston, her second save of the match.

At the half, both teams kept a clean sheet as the score remained 0-0. The Lumberjacks outshot the Eagles three to six with four shots on goals. EWU took four corner kicks and took one shot on goal. Kelsee Winston tallied four saves during the first half. Allison Raniere, Taylor Matheny and Vanderhyden all took one shot each for the Eagles in the first half.

Returning from halftime, Raniere and Vanderhyden came out aggressive and took back-to-back shots but both of their shots sailed high.

The Eagles connected in the 71st minute when Jenny Chavez received a pass from Emma Vanderhyden and headed it in for her fourth goal of the season, giving Eastern a 1-0 lead.

Northern Arizona's Paige Maling tried to answer back after Chavez's goal but the shot went high.

After 90 minutes of play the score remained 1-0 and Eastern left Flagstaff with the road victory. NAU outshot EWU 13-8 with six shots on goal. Eastern tallied six saves on the match and NAU only had one.

TOURNAMENT HOPES: With one regular season match remaining, Eastern Washington is still in the hunt for a Big Sky Tournament berth. Four of the six spots have been filled with Weber State, Idaho, Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona already punching their tickets.

The Eagles can control their own destiny with a win at Southern Utah on Sunday. A Montana loss to Sacramento State or a Portland State loss or draw to Northern Colorado will also help get Eastern Washington into the tournament. The Grizzlies and PSU are still battling for the final two spots as well. Eastern Washington is currently fifth in the BSC Standings.

The victory this evening ended Northern Arizona's hopes for a regular season title and gave Weber State at least a share of the Big Sky Regular Season Title with Idaho still having a chance to clinch a share as well.

WIN LOSS RECORDS: The Eagles are now 7-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in Big Sky play. The Lumberjacks now sit at a 9-4-3 overall record and 5-1-2 in conference play after today's match.

KEYS TO THE GAME: Jenny Chavez scored the Eagles only goal off of a header in the 71st minute of play. Kelsee Winston played all 90 minutes in net and recorded a career-high six saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Allison Raniere and Emma Vanderhyden led EWU in total shots taken on the match with three each, followed by Chavez and Matheny who each had one.

WHAT'S NEXT:  EWU will be back in action this Sunday, Oct. 21, for their final regular season match aginst Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah at 12 p.m. Pacific time.
