Eagles Finish the Indoor Regular Season at the Husky Classic

Senior Leanne Asper breaks EWU's record in the 800 meters

FULL RESULTS

The Eastern Washington University track and field teams closed out their indoor regular season at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., today (Feb. 10), as senior Leanne Asper broke EWU's 800 meters record by finishing in  2:11.21. The previous record was held by Caitlin Prunty from 2005 with 2:12.48.

"Leanne Asper gets the performance of the meet for us and she is having a great season in the 800 and 400 events," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "The Husky Classic provided another opportunity for the team to improve on their marks and move up on the Big Sky lists and we had many athletes do that."

Sophomore Keshun McGee also inched closer to breaking the EWU record in the triple jump with a 51-9 3/4 mark. The jump puts the sophomore at 16th in the nation.

"Keshun put together two stellar performances in the long and triple jump that were a joy to watch," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "His athleticism and drive are speaking volumes right now. Today's efforts indicated the team is ready for the final push to the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships."

More comments from head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On individuals: "Rebecca Tarbert won the team battle in the 60 meters. It is so exciting to watch Rebecca and Alexis Rolan race. Kudos to Alexis, though for her performance in the 200 and the long jump. Carli Corpus and Kaelah Corrigan both ran personal records. They are doing a great job pushing themselves to personal bests as they continue to improve. In throws, Paris Flenoy threw a personal record in the weight throw and took the team lead in that event. Samantha Raines vaulted 12 feet again for the third week in a row. Consistent marks mean a big improvement is coming."

On championships: "We are heading into taper time as we get ready for the Indoor Big SKy Conference Championships. As always, the goal is to head into the championship meet recovered, healthy and ready to compete."

More comments from head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On throwers: "As a group our throwers had a solid meet. I expect they will be surprising the competition at the indoor championships."

On individuals: "After a lengthy stretch during this indoor season, it was outstanding for Jeremy VanAssche to show why he is a conference champion with today's sprint final. Logan Stahl faced a tough group in the 800 today. We are looking forward to seeing him race against the conference's best in Flagstaff."
