CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team played their last home match of the regular season today (Apr. 22) against Southern Utah and lost 6-1. This puts the Eagles at a 9-12 mark overall and 6-5 in conference. Janaya Smith and Rachel Swindell were honored pre-match as they played their last home games as Eagles.
"This was a really hard fought match today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "Our doubles continues to be impressive and we had really good desire and fight out there, which is what we want to see. It's tough to come out on the losing end but we want to use that as motivation for our upcoming conference tournament matches."
The Eagles clinched the doubles point early on with two wins at No. 1 and No. 3, allowing No. 2 to go unfinished. Janaya Smith and Rylee Braeden defeated their opponents 6-3 on the first court and Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell teamed up at No. 3 to find success 6-3. Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall ended their match 5-4 after Eastern picked up the overall doubles point.
Smith opened up singles play in a long three sets but couldn't pick up the win losing 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Braeden also went to three sets (3-6, 6-3, 3-6) followed by Broussard who lost 1-6, 4-6. Worrall fell 1-6, 1-6, as well as Swindell who fell 6-7 (6), 5-7 and Sottile (3-6, 2-6).
The squad looks forward to traveling to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Big Sky Conference Championships next weekend (Apr. 26-28). Eastern has secured the third seed for the tournament and their first match is on Thursday (Apr. 26) at 9 a.m. against the No. 6 seed.
