Eagles Soar to Victory over Grambling State, 2-1

EWU battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to collect its second win of the season

CHENEY, Wash.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team battled for their victory over Grambling State today (Aug. 26) at the EWU Soccer Field 2-1. With the win Eastern improves to 2-1-1 overall while the Tigers fall to 1-3.

The Eagles fell behind in the 13th minute, but were able to come back after goals from Devan Talley and the game winner Allison Raniere.

"This was a different kind of game than anything we'll play all year with the way that Grambling played with their shape. It was a physical game and it was a learning lesson for us in terms of keeping our composure," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Even after going down a goal after the set piece, I thought we had some spurts where we played pretty well and we scored twice which is always a good thing."

After an Eastern foul the Tigers took an opportunity from the top of the box when Kaylee Holt fed Kristy Melendez the ball and she was able to put it past Eastern's defense to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles saw chances to score early with two corner kicks. In the 16th minute of play, Talley received the ball inside the box and fought through traffic. She was able to net the equalizer as the Eagles tied the match 1-1.

With just under 10 minutes of play left in the first half sophomore Taylor Matheny took her chance for another EWU goal but it was saved by GSU goalkeeper Hanna Johnson. The half ended with a match score of 1-1.

The Tigers started the second half with the first shot. David took her chance but Eastern's goalkeeper Kelsee Winston was there for the save. In the 65th minute of play Winston recorded her third save of the match against freshman Alyssa Ozuna's shot attempt.

With the clock winding down the Eagles saw one more opportunity in the 81st minute of play from Raniere. The EWU goal came from the right side of the field and was netted straight into the upper left corner, the goal was assisted by freshman Mya Elder-Hammond giving Eastern the lead 2-1.

Eastern's defense was able to shut down the Tigers for the remainder of the match, giving EWU a 2-1 victory.

Eastern outshot Grambling State 17-8, with five shots on goal today. Winston played all 90 minutes in net, collecting four saves.

Win-Loss Record
The Eagles are now 2-1-1 on their 2018 season, and 51-25-9 overall since head coach Chad Bodnar began in 2014. Today's match marked the first time in program history that Eastern has faced Grambling State, who now fall to 1-3 on the season.

Bodnar Bites

On Allowing a Goal Off of a Set Piece:
"We've gone down a couple of times this weekend but we battled back and got a result today and a win. With us mixing all of the young athletes that we have on the field right now, I still saw good performances. We are growing as a group right now and we have to keep learning and trying to win while we do that."

On the Performance of the Midfielders and the Bench: "Our midfielders are always going to give us a lot of effort. Jenny Chavez battled a lot of physical contact today and Devan Talley is still working on fitness after coming back from an injury and she was able to score, which is a great thing and nice to see from her. We also had some of them come in off of the bench and play very well. Mya Elder-Hammond came in and changed the game and Glory Smith gave us some minutes and that's positive going forward to have depth."

On Kelsee Winston's Performance: "Kelsee didn't have to do a whole lot today, but what she did, she did well. Again, it was a physical game and they were putting balls into the box which are always dangerous and hard to defend. We did what we had to do, we got out with a win and hopefully we learned and got better today."

On the Overall Weekend and Looking Forward: "We need to start games better. We've created chances early in both games and today we had a couple of breakaways that we didn't finish on. If we finish the chances earlier, we take some pressure off, but those opportunities will come down the road. Everything is getting better and we're winning while we do it, hopefully we will continue that this week. We're looking forward to Boise State on Friday."
