LOGAN, Utah— The Eastern Washington University soccer team hit the road today (Sept. 14) in Logan, Utah, as they took on the Utah State Aggies to a victory of 2-0 in their third and final road match of non-conference play.
"Our team figured it out when it mattered. Today was a gritty performance that finished with a much more complete second half," said head coach
Chad Bodnar. "Finishing with another clean sheet and creating a lot of scoring opportunities gives us a good start to the weekend."
Wasting no time the Aggies took the first shot of the game in the second minute of play from Ashley Cardozo but Eagle goalie
Kelsee Winston was there for the save.
The Eagles saw their first shot at a goal off of a corner kick in the 20
th minute from senior
Allison Raniere. Raniere found
Jenny Chavez for a header but she was unable to convert as the ball hit the post.
Eastern Washington got on the board in the 22nd minute following an own goal from the Aggies. Junior
Saige Lyons dribbled through traffic inside the penalty box and took a shot. The shot then deflected off of a USU defender and into the goal. Lyons was originally credited with the goal, but further review changed the play to an own goal.
Following Lyons' goal the Aggies tried to answer back with another shot from Cardozo but
Kelsee Winston is there for the save again, marking her second save of the match.
Eastern saw another opportunity when sophomore
Sariah Keister tried for another EWU goal in the 26
th minute but Aggie goalie Rachel Noel was there for the save. With just under five minutes left in the first half
Glory Smith took back-to-back corner kicks where she found Chavez for another header but the ball sailed wide.
After 45 minutes of play the score remained at 1-0 with Eastern leading Utah State. At halftime, the Eagles outshot the Aggies 7-6, with four shots on goal and three corner kicks.
Returning from the half, the Eagles took the first shot from junior
Brooke Dunbar but Utah State's keeper was there for the save, marking her fourth of the match. Senior
Alexis Stephenson tried to make the score 2-0 in the 51
st minute of play but unfortunately her shot hit the goal post.
Another Eagle save came from
Kelsee Winston in the 56
th minute off of an Aggie shot, marking number four for Winston.
In the 67
th minute Dunbar netted the Eagles' second goal of the match, after being able to two touch it off of the Utah State defender and bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
After 90 minutes of total play the score remained 2-0 and the Eagles left Utah State with a victory.
The Eagles outshot the Aggies 17-8 with nine shots on goal and six corner kicks.
Win-Loss Record
The Eagles are now 4-3-1 and the Aggies fall to 1-5 after today's match.
Today's match was the seventh time in program history that the Eagles have faced the Aggies. The game marks back-to-back EWU victories against Utah State and the first-ever win for Eastern in Logan, Utah.

Kelsee Winston recorded 90 minutes in the net for the Eagles in today's match as well as four saves on the day for her third shutout of the season.
Brooke Dunbar scored Eastern's second goal of the match in the 67
th minute of play, marking her second goal of the season in the last three games. Dunbar led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal.
What's Next
EWU will be back in action this Sunday, Sept. 16, for their last game of non-conference play. The Eagles will take on South Dakota State at the EWU Soccer Field at 1 p.m. All regular season home matches are complimentary to the public.
