Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Eagles Fall to Sacramento State in Their First Big Sky Conference Match 1-0

EWU is back in action this Sunday for more Big Sky play.

CHENEY, Wash.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team took on the Sacramento State Hornets to a 1-0 loss today (Sept. 21) at the EWU Soccer Field.

"It just isn't good enough right now and we have to do better. It's one of those things where we're in the other team's half for most of the game and we're just not creating anything going forward. I think the backline had another good day up until the bobble at the very end," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "It was a solid backline for us but we're just not good enough pushing forward."

The Eagles started the match off by taking two back-to-back shots from Allison Raniere and Sariah Keister but both shots were saved by Sacramento State's goalie Kaylyn Evans.

The Hornets saw their first attempt at a goal with back-to-back shots from Skylar Littlefield, who's shot sailed left, and Kim Bustillos' who's shot was saved by EWU goalie Kelsee Winston, marking her first of the match.

After 45 minutes of play the score remained 0-0. EWU outshot the Hornets nine to five in the first half but were unable to score off of them. EWU keeper Winston had two saves on the half.

Returning for another 45 minutes of play the Eagles took the first shot of the second half from Keister but the ball sailed left.

The Hornets fired off their first shot of the second half from Kim Bustillos but Winston was there for the save.

The Eagles were able to get off three more corner kicks and four more shots in the second half but in the 89th minute of play Sacramento State would get on the board. The Hornets' Bonnie Ford took a shot that was saved by Winston, but the shot deflected off of Winston and to the foot of Littlefield. Littlefield sailed it into the upper right corner and gave Sacramento State a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes to play.

After 90 minutes of play the Eagles recorded 15 total shots with eight on goal and five corner kicks. The Hornets took 11 total shots with seven shots on goal and two corner kicks.

Win-Loss Record
The Eagles are now 4-4-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky play. The Hornets are now 2-6-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

Notables
Kelsee Winston recorded a total of 90 minutes in the net for the Eagles and tied her existing career high of six saves on today's match.

Raniere led the Eagles in total shots taken in today's match with four, three of them being on goal, followed by Devan Talley who had three with one shot on goal.

What's Next
The Eagles continue their Big Sky play this Sunday, Sept. 23 when they take on Portland State at the EWU Soccer Field at 1 p.m. All regular season home matches are complimentary to the public.

Bodnar Bites

On His Message to the Team: "We have another game on Sunday that we need to win. These things happen, we have to right the ship and find a way to win even if it's a struggle right now in front of goal. We had five or six good opportunities to score and just couldn't."

On the Backline's Play: "I thought defensively we did well but you can't depend on our backline to get a shutout every game. Again, it's our attacking third and finishing the chances that we have. We had a solid four chances in the first thirty minutes."

On Playing Portland State on Sunday: "We need to understand that everybody that is going to come in here is going to give us their best shot. Sacramento State defended well and took their chance when they had it. This group has to understand that collectively that we have to earn it again this year. Sunday is important for us."
