EWU Soccer Defeats Weber State on the Road, 1-0

Eastern returns home undefeated after two shutouts over the weekend

OGDEN, Utah. – The Eastern Washington University soccer team played Weber State today (Oct. 13) to a 1-0 win on the road. The Eagles took an early lead following an own goal by Weber State.

"The game on Friday was very different than today, but our players did what both games required and fought extremely hard this weekend. Weber State played well and really pushed at us for periods of time after we got the early goal, but our backline was organized and attacked the defensive set pieces well," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Two clean sheets in a row for our group is a positive and we looked like a team that knew they were going to have to defend well to win today. We are extremely proud of our players and staff; I like our energy and competitive spirit and I hope we keep driving forward as a group."

The early goal came for the Eastern Eagles when freshman Riley Walkington stepped by a Weber State defender to slot Sariah Keister for a give-and-go as Keister tried delivering it back across the box to Walkington. The cross came to WSU sophomore Trinity Kerr who tried to clear the ball, but it skipped off her foot into the net for an own goal. The pressure on the ball from the Eagles resulted in a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

The Weber State Wildcats tried to even the score with a shot to the bottom right corner in the 20th minute and another in the 30th, but EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston saved them both and secured a first half shutout.

As the second half began, Winston made a third save in the 56th minute following a shot from WSU junior Mylee Broad that was headed for the bottom left side.

EWU freshman Brooke Flores had a shot towards the top center in the 68th minute and sophomore Mya Elder-Hammond beamed a shot towards the bottom center in the 78th minute, but WSU goalkeeper Nikki Pittman came up with the saves.

Winston recorded her eleventh shutout of her career as the game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Eagles. She is one shutout away from becoming tied for the all-time career record for shutouts in EWU's history.

Win-Loss Record

After today's conference match, the Eagles are 6-5-2 as they remain undefeated in conference play with a record of 3-0-1 while Weber State falls to 2-10-2 with a conference record of 1-3-2. The victory marked the third-straight for Eastern as their unbeaten streak moves to four-straight matches.
