EWU Soccer Falls to Sacramento State, 1-0

The Eagles return home to compete against Montana on Wednesday, Oct. 30 for the regular season title

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Eastern Washington University soccer team played against Sacramento State today (Oct. 27) to a 1-0 deficit on the road. The Eagles return to action to compete for the regular season title this Wednesday, Oct. 30 versus Montana at the EWU Soccer Field.

"We played well in the first half for the conditions that we were up against. The wind was gusting to 40 miles per hour and we didn't take our chances when we had it in our favor," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Credit to Sacramento State, they battled hard and stayed organized defensively, but we just didn't get it done today. Fortunately for us, we have a big game on Wednesday against another good opponent and we get a chance to bounce back quickly."

The Eagles put the pressure on Sacramento State right off the gate with a shot from redshirt sophomore Brittany Delridge in the first minute, but the shot sailed out left. Sacramento State responded in the eighth, ninth, and 11th with three shots of their own but EWU goalkeeper Kelsee Winston reached out with the saves.

In the 18th and 20th minute senior Brooke Dunbar found some space to let off a couple of shots that were headed towards the bottom right corner, but goalkeeper Aaliyah Fesili was in front to prevent a goal for Sacramento State.

By the end of the first half, the Eagles outshot the Hornets 8-4, but the match remained scoreless at 0-0.

As the second half began, Winston made another save in the 54th minute to keep the match tied for the Eagles. The goal for Sacramento State came in the 72nd minute from Aubrey Goodwill.

In the 74th minute freshman Riley Walkington attempted to tie the match with a shot towards the bottom left corner, but it was saved by Fesili and the match ended in a 1-0 deficit for the Eagles.
