Peatling and Kapri Morrow are Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January

Basketball players have big performances in the month to help their respective teams to some impressive victories

Basketball players Mason Peatling and Violet Kapri Morrow have been honored as the January Scholar-Athletes of the Month as selected by the Eastern Washington University athletic department.

Peatling is from Melbourne, Australia, and is a junior with a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in business administration-finance. Kapri Morrow is from Tacoma, Wash. (Wilson HS) and has a 3.42 GPA with a double major in criminal justice and sociology.

Peatling averaged 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in the month of January while guiding EWU to a 3-3 record. He made 59.7 percent of his shots from the field and also had nine assists and eight steals for the Eagles, whose highlights in the month were back-to-back victories over Montana (78-71) and Montana State (85-81).

After missing EWU's first 10 games with an injury, Peatling has been EWU's leading scorer in five of nine games since and has also led in rebounds four times. An honorable mention All-Big Sky selection a year ago, Peatling is averaging 17.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks in eight league games thus far, and 15.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.7 blocks overall. He's shooting at a 58.6 percent clip, making 7-of-13 3-point attempts (53.8 percent) and 20-of-30 free throws (66.7 percent). In league games only, he's sixth in the league in scoring, third in shooting (60.2 percent) and fifth in rebounding, but won't rank among the overall league leaders until later this season (a player must play in 75 percent of a team's games to be ranked).

In his 74-game career (52 as a starter), he's averaged 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds with a total of 61 assists, 56 blocks and 50 steals. He hit double figures in scoring 12 times in 2017-18 and 23 in his career thus far, and has had at least 10 rebounds seven times in his career, all during his sophomore season. He now has six double-doubles in his career after having five in the 2017-18 season.

Morrow averaged 20.6 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game during the month of January while shooting 48.5 percent from the field. She scored over 20 points in three out of seven contests, and was the College Sports Madness Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 21.

She scored in double figures in each game during the month of January, and has an active streak of 16 games in double digits this season and 19-straight dating back to last season. She scored a career-high 37 points in overtime victory at Montana State on Jan. 19 which is tied for third all-time for points in a single game in EWU history. She made the game-tying three-pointer to send the game into overtime and then the game-winning layup to win the game in overtime.

Morrow became the 18th member of Eastern's 1,000-point club in a 68-62 win at Montana on Jan. 10. She is currently 14th on Eastern's all-time scoring list with 1,097 points. For the season, she is currently 38th in the nation and third in the Big Sky with an average of 18.6 points per game while leading the team in rebounds and steals.

A third team All-Big Sky selection a year ago, Morrow has scored in double figures in 44 out of 110 career games, averaging 10.0 points per contest. She has 13 games with 20 or more points and has led the team in scoring in 11 out of 18 games this season. She has three double-doubles in her career, one this season and two in 2017-18.
