Eastern Washington University student-athletes concluded the winter quarter with a collective 3.28 grade point average, marking the 35th-straight quarter the Eagles have combined for a department-wide 3.0 average.
Â
One of the student-athletes, track and field competitor
Dante Tyler, was recently accepted into the Gonzaga Law School Thomas More Scholarship Program. Tyler, a senior thrower and 2015 graduate of Richland (Wash.) High School, is also the president of the Associated Students of EWU (ASEWU). The scholarship is worth more than $40,000 and is to enable students to pursue careers in public service unencumbered by substantial law school debt.Â
Â
In addition to Tyler, senior men's basketball player
Ty Gibson has been accepted to the University of Washington graduate program for accounting. Plus, football player
Zach Eagle and soccer player
Megan Spataro have been accepted to EWU's physical therapy program. All three are high school graduates in Washington -- Gibson from Issaquah, Eagle from Camas and Spataro from Olympia.
Â
Tyler, Gibson, Eagle and Spataro all have an accumulative GPA of 3.90 or above, including a perfect 4.0 for Spataro. In the fall, 32 of Eastern's 301 student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA, including Tyler and Spataro. An additional 98 had from between a 3.5 and 3.99 GPA, and 66 had between a 3.0 and 3.49. That's 65 percent of all student-athletes (197 of 301) achieving at least a 3.0.
Â
"The Streak" dates back to the 2007 fall quarter. The accumulative GPA of EWU's 301 student-athletes is now 3.46, with the high-water mark of 3.54 coming after fall quarter this year when EWU had a record 3.48 collective GPA.
Â
Additionally, 11 of EWU's 12 athletic programs finished the winter quarter with a team GPA of at least 3.03, including women's golf with a 3.59 GPA. All 12 programs have an accumulative GPA of 3.06 or better, with eight over 3.50.
