Eagles Drop Friday’s Match to South Dakota State, 1-0

EWU heads to Vermillion, S.D., to conclude their road trip this Sunday, Sept. 15

BROOKINGS, S.D. The Eastern Washington University soccer team ends with a 1-0 defeat against South Dakota State today (Sept. 13). With the loss, the Eagles move to 2-4-1 while SDSU advances to 4-3.

"The game was there for us to take today and we are just not getting it done in critical moments to get results," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "We need to take a big look at everything we are doing from top to bottom and fix it so we can get going in the right direction."

The Eagles saw their first contested shot after the fifth minute from SDSU's senior forward Leah Manuleleua but the ball sailed out right. Shortly after, the Eagles goalkeeper Kelsee Winston had her first save of the match when she reached out to block a shot that was headed towards the net in the 18th minute.

The Eagles competed fearlessly hoping to gain advantage before the halftime whistle blew with a shot by Sariah Keister in the 40th minute, but the score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of play.

Returning from halftime, the Eagles found their first opportunity to shoot the ball in the 52nd minute when freshman Madison Kem saw an opening but the shot was blocked by SDSU's defender.

The goal for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits came in the 61st minute following a shot by Maureen Tolley that was saved by Winston, but the ball bounced around in the box and eventually landed at the feet of Manuleleua who found the back of the net. The Jackrabbits went ahead 1-0 following the goal by Manuleleua.

In the 67th minute, the Jackrabbits received a red card after a foul from junior defender Gabby Vivier-Hannay and SDSU played one player down for the remainder of the match.

Eastern continued to search for the equalizer by putting up 11 more shots before the final whistle blew, but the score remained 1-0 in the Jackrabbits' favor.
