POCATELLO, Idaho – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team traveled to Pocatello, Idaho on Wednesday evening (March 4) to take on the Idaho State Bengals where they fell 77-49.
"Idaho State is one of the teams in the Big Sky that I think is playing really well right now, and they showed it tonight," said head coach
Wendy Schuller. "It's always a hard-fought game them and today was no exception."
Eastern Washington opened up the game on a 4-0 run as the Bengals went 0-for-5 from the field to start. After the Eagles fell scoreless for nearly 4:30, ISU used a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. Despite holding Idaho State to just 27.8 percent from the field during the first, the Eagles trailed 11-8 after the opening period.
Idaho State used a 15-2 run in the second quarter to outscore the Eagles 27-12, taking a 38-20 lead into the half.
Bella Cravens erupted for 10 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter. The Eagles were only edged 20-16 and shot 53.3 percent (8-15) from the field, but trailed the Bengals 58-36 heading into the final frame.
Tatiana Reese provided a spark for the Eagles off the bench in the fourth, going on a 7-0 run by herself to cut Eastern's deficit to 64-47 and forced an Idaho State timeout. Eastern Washington was solid from the field once again, shooting 50 percent from the field in the final quarter of play. However, it wasn't enough to stop the Bengals who closed the game on a 13-2 run en route to the 77-49 victory.
WIN-LOSS RECORDS: Eastern Washington drops to 4-24 on the season and 3-16 in Big Sky Conference play. Idaho State earns the season sweep for the second-straight year over the Eagles, improving to 17-11 overall and 13-6 in conference action.
TOP PERFORMANCES: Bella Cravens scored in double figures for the seventh time in the last eight games with 16 points. She was also a rebound short of her seventh double-double of the season. She was 8-for-11 from the field with two steals, a block and an assist.
Milly Knowles followed with a career-high eight points (3-7) with two assists.
Tatiana Reese also scored a career-high seven points, all coming consecutively in the fourth quarter. She finished with three assists.
Jessica McDowell-White led the team with four assists and added five points, three rebounds and a steal.
KEY STATISTICS: Eastern Washington shot 45 percent (22-49) from the field, 27 percent from three-point range (3-11) and 67 percent from the free throw line (2-3).
Idaho State shot 50 percent overall (31-62), making eight of its 19 three-point attempts (42%) and were 7-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Turnovers troubled the Eagles, as they committed 18 to Idaho State's eight. The Eagles were outrebounded 36 to 25.
UP NEXT: The final game of the regular season is set for Friday, March 6, at Weber State. The Eagles will go for the sweep of the Wildcats at 6 p.m. Pacific time.
