Five Eastern Student-Athletes Recognized by Academic Departments

Among them, track and field standout Madison Doepker earns the prestigious Frances B. Huston Medallion Award from the College of Business

Five Eastern Washington University student-athletes were recently honored with honors by their respective academic departments as virtual commencement ceremonies on June 13 concluded the 2019-20 academic year at EWU.

Track and Field standout Madison Doepker was honored by the College of Business as this year's winner of the Frances B. Huston Medallion Award. Also recognized with honors by the College of Business was Academic All-America basketball player Mason Peatling.

The College of Health Science and Public Health honored a trio of former Eagles. Tennis player Marta Heinen was recognized as the Outstanding Senior in the Recreation and Tourism Management department, while former track and field competitor Dominque Butler earned the same honor from Health and Physical Science. Soccer player M'Kenna Hayes earned recognition on the Dental Hygiene Honor Society.

The Frances B. Huston Medallion recognizes just 20 graduating seniors throughout the EWU campus for excellence in academics, leadership and service. The medallion award program reflects Huston's compassion and respect for what education can do for an individual and community. Huston is a former English professor and EWU benefactor, and Huston Hall on the EWU campus in Cheney, Wash., was named in her honor in 2006.

Doepker is a 2015 graduate of Walla Walla (Wash.) High School and received her Eastern degree in professional accounting. A three-time All-Big Sky performer in the javelin and hammer throw, she was a four-time member of the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for indoor track and field. She will also be All-Academic for a fourth-straight year outdoors when that squad is announced later this month.

Peatling also earned BSC All-Academic honors four times at EWU.  The Australia native and 2019-20 Big Sky Conference MVP received his master's degree in business administration after previously  receiving his undergraduate degree in professional accounting.

Heinen is originally from Belgium and was recently recognized as the International Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Regional Senior Player of the Year. Butler is a 2014 graduate of Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane, Wash., and last competed for EWU in 2019.

Hayes was a senior for EWU in 2017 and earned first team All-Big Sky honors for the soccer program. She is a graduate of Kentridge High School in Kent, Wash., and on May 23, 2020, married former EWU football player Ketner Kupp.

On June 2, the Eastern Athletic Department honored a total of 56 student-athletes who graduated during the 2019-20 school year, plus another 10 football players expected to graduate at the end of fall quarter of 2020. A list of those honored is available at: https://goeags.com/documents/2020/6/16/20SeniorRecognitionProgram.pdf.
