Men Finish Eighth, Women 11th, at Big Sky Conference Championships

Justin Roosma continues his hot streak as he finishes 16th at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Hillsboro, Ore.

COMPLETE RESULTS

The Eastern Washington University men's and women's cross country teams competed in 5K and 8K races in Hillsboro, Ore., for the Big Sky Conference Championship. This year's Big Sky Championship was hosted by Portland State at the Meriwether National Golf Club this morning (Oct. 29).

The men finished eighth overall while the women finished 11th. The teams competed against 10 other schools, and both the men and women's teams from Northern Arizona came out on top and finished first.

"The depth individually and collectively as teams was as good as advertised. Nothing is given in a Big Sky Conference meet and every place was earned today. Having young teams is a double-edged sword. It gets you excited for the future and what is possible, but having that experience is key. Today it came back to bite us a bit on both sides as we struggled where we lacked a bit of that championship experience," said head coach Sam Read.

The men were led by sophomore Justin Roosma who clocked in a 16th place overall finish with a time of 24:17.4. Freshman Noah Hasselblad came in after him in 44th place and clocked in a time of 25:13.5.
"The men made a great step forward this year, not only in performance and placing but also in what we believe we are capable of. Justin Roosma highlighted the individual performances today. He passed a lot of bodies in the second half of the race and came close to snagging an all conference spot; which puts you in the conversation with some of the best in the nation," said Read. "Carter also raced like veteran and set himself up for a perfect race. He lost his momentum a bit at the end to really finish off his performance but it was great to see him step up when it counts."

For the women's side Nicole Deherrera led the team and finished 50th with a time of 18:15.7, followed by Jasmin Muneton who finished 54th with a time of 18:18.5.

"The women ran really tough but we're disappointed knowing this was not our a-game and we can be better. In a meet like this, our women are really missing that low-stick to score well as a team. We have really strong depth and have individuals that can and will develop into that person but we're not there yet like we hoped to be," noted Read. "Nicole led the way for us after battling an injury for the middle of the season, and Jasmin and Madilynn ran a strong second half of the race to provide the depth with one of our usual top five, Kaylin, not being able to finish because of injury."

The Eagles will now send their top runners to the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif., on Nov. 12.
