HILLSBORO, Ore. – In its first of two away matches this weekend, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team secured a 1-0 shutout over hosts Portland State today (Oct. 8) at the Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Ore. Freshman forward
Gillian Martin scored the lone game-winning goal after a brilliant strike into the upper right-hand corner early in the match.
"It was really great to see our group find success today against a gritty Portland State side. The team did a great job staying composed and keeping the ball in the first half, and defensively managing their attacking interchangeability as the game progressed on," said head coach
Missy Strasburg. "
Brooke Flores had a great game off the bench and extremely impactful for us on both sides of the ball. We now turn our attention to winning on Sunday against another tough conference opponent in Sac State."
The Eagles pressed the Vikings out of the gate, firing off two shots and creating just as many chances in the first five minutes with efforts by
Mareonna Henderson and
Gillian Martin, respectively.
Henderson would take a second crack on goal before EWU goalkeeper
Kelsee Winston made an amazing save as she ran out to the top of her box to dive on the ball, denying any threat and keeping the goose egg on the board.
It was Martin who fired Eastern in front after receiving the ball short from an EWU free kick in the 23
rd minute as she cut inside from the left and squeezed her right-footed effort in at the far post upper seven from the edge of the box. Martin, who scored her first collegiate goal against St. Thomas back in September, collects her second career goal and second game-winning goal in an Eagle uniform.
Just minutes later, Winston would make a second crucial save in the 26th minute as the ball was headed towards the upper corner before the senior captain lifted it up as it bounced off the crossbar and away from danger.
Chances continued to fall for both sides as the first half minutes ticked down, with
Taylor Matheny shooting towards the bottom left post (42nd minute),
Brooke Flores seeing a brilliant cross into the box which was cleared away (43rd minute) as well as a late opportunity for PSU with a set piece just outside the EWU 18-yard box (45
th minute).
In the second half,
Anessa Campos provided the Eagles with several chances, bouncing one shot off the cross-bar in the 48
th minute and another shot from outside the goalie box in the 55
th minute, which was scooped up by the Vikings goalkeeper Sidney O'billovich.
Attempting to get back on level terms, the Vikings drew many opportunities in their attacking third, firing off several uncontested shots which were all from 25 plus yards out, but with the help of the Eagle backline and a veteran goalkeeper, EWU managed to keep PSU out of their net to return home with a 1-0 shutout victory.
