The Eastern Washington University men's and women's cross country teams competed in 6K and 10K races in Sacramento, Calif., for the NCAA West Regional. This year's NCAA West Regional was hosted by Sacramento State at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course this morning (Nov. 12).
"The west regional is stacked top to bottom with great competition. I thought we showed a lot of poise not getting overwhelmed with the big stage and had confidence in our program and what we are doing," said head coach
Sam Read. "Both teams have had shown some great improvement this year that bodes really well for our future. The improvement came through the results today."
The men finished 22nd overall, the highest finish since 2015, improving from last year where they placed 25th. The teams competed against a number of other schools, and both the men and women's teams from Stanford came out on top and finished first. Â
There were 34 other schools competing alongside the women and they placed 28th overall improving from last year's NCAA West Regional where they placed 34th.
The men were led by sophomore
Justin Roosma who clocked in a 86th place overall finish with a time of 31:43.0. Freshman
Noah Hasselblad came in after him in 88th place and clocked in a time of 31:47.5.
"On the men's side Justin and Noah worked together well through the race. They moved up about 50 places from mile one to the finish. That really helped our guys move up as a team and out perform their incoming ranking," noted Read. "Our guys are young, five out of the seven were running their first 10k, and they adapted to the distance and ran really smart."
For the women's side Nicole Deherrera led the team and finished 119th with a time of 22:08.1, followed by
Jasmin Muneton who finished 156th with a time of 22:37.8.
"Our women took some really tough hits at the end of this season with injuries and we came in missing some key pieces. We ended up at the starting line with six runners with freshmen eligibility, four of which are true freshmen," added Read. "Nicole ran her best race of the season and led the way for us. This is even more impressive knowing the crazy 48 hours leading up to this race she had. Another stand out race for us was Amanda. Her progression over this season was tremendous and came up huge for us at the end of the season filling the holes on our team."
This completes the men's and women's cross country season until indoor track and field starts.
"I'm really proud of both teams and to be an Eagle today. We had our ups and downs this season with things we wish we could do over, but overall we are trending the right way and have big things to come in our future," concluded Read.
