Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eastern Drops Road Opener to Pepperdine

Jaydia Martin led all players with 19 points

The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team took on the Pepperdine waves this afternoon (Nov. 14) in Malibu, Calif., where they fell 67-48. Jaydia Martin led all players with 19 points in the loss, as the Eagles move to 0-2 on the young season.

"Our squad did a great job of locking into our scouting report and game plan at the defensive end, forcing Pepperdine into 19 turnovers and several forced shots. We just had a difficult time securing the rebound and winning the possession," said head coach Joddie Gleason. "Offensively we did not find much of a rhythm all game. We will continue to work with this young group on shot selection and figure out more ways to set each other up for good shots. Pepperdine did a good job of taking us out of our initial action and we have to be able to move into our secondary options more consistently. This takes time and repetition and will not happen overnight, but we will get there. It's very early in the year and we know we will be battle tested by our tough preseason schedule. We will stick together and it will help us prepare for Big Sky competition down the road."

Pepperdine started the game on a 6-0 run and held the Eagles off of the scoreboard until the 5:54 mark when Alexis Pettis drained a three to cut the lead in half. Andie Zylak then hit a three-pointer for a 5-0 run to put the Eagles within a point, 6-5. Pepperdine used an 8-2 run to pull ahead 14-7. A Martin three-pointer made it 17-12 Pepperdine, which was the difference after the first quarter.

Jacinta Buckley got the scoring started with a layup in the second half and Martin made two free throws to complete a 7-0 run for the Eagles that spanned two quarters, putting EWU within striking distance, 17-16. The Waves then went on an 8-0 run to grow a 25-16 advantage, holding the Eagles scoreless for nearly four minutes. After Pepperdine built its largest lead of 10 points, 30-20, Martin's second triple put EWU back within seven. However, the Eagles were held scoreless for the final 2:30 and Pepperdine led 32-23 at the half.

The Eagles were outscored 21-13 and trailed by as many as 22 in the third quarter and headed into the fourth down 53-36.

Pepperdine opened up the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run, keeping the Eagles off of the scoreboard until the 4:26 mark. The game looked to be all but over, but there was no quit in Eastern Washington. The Eagles went on a 12-1 run over 4:26, making five of six field goals during the span, and held the Waves without a field goal for the final 4:45. However, it was too little, too late, as Eastern Washington fell 67-48.
