CHENEY, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team welcomed the College of Idaho to Roos Field today (Feb. 28) for its first home match of the 2021 spring season and defeated them 5-0 in Cheney, Wash. The Eagles took an early lead that would create the momentum for the rest of the match and seal COI's fate.
"We were much sharper in front of goal today. We had a lot of opportunities to score goals and we've been struggling with that. A clean sheet, and at the end of the day we got a win," said head coach
Chad Bodnar. "A lot of players got in that haven't gotten to play much this season - and to get off the schneid in terms of scoring goals was a good thing. We changed our shape back to the way we used to play and we're a lot more dangerous when we do that."
An early goal from
Brittany Delridge in the third minute gave the Eagles the lead as the assist came from a through-ball delivered by
McKaley Goffard.
Eight minutes later, freshman
Grace Terrill tried to get the two-goal advantage with a shot to the bottom center but it was picked up by the Yotes goalkeeper Shae Waters. However, Terrill was not finished as she would find the back of the net on the next attempt as she shot the ball and scored in the 11
th minute from an assist by
Taylor Matheny.
The Eagles were relentless on the attack firing off three shots back-to-back from a trio of Eagles in
Maddie Morgan, Matheny and
Sariah Keister, in which two sailed over the crossbar and one rolled to the goalkeepers hands.
The Eagles shot the ball three more times before finding the back of the net for their third goal in the 38
th minute. The masterpiece came from the vision of
Brooke Flores to find
Riley Walkington who danced her way through traffic and buried the ball in the right corner, giving Eastern a three-goal advantage before halftime.
At the start of the second half,
Madison Kem would find some space to let off a shot but Waters was there to deflect the ball away. Waters failed to clear the ball from her 18-yard box as it fell to the feet of
McKaley Goffard who did not hesitate in slotting it in the back of the net. After just two minutes from the start of the second half, the Eagles took a 4-0 lead.
Flores collected the fifth goal in the 75
th minute, denying any hope for a comeback for the Yotes.
The Eagles stood their ground in the closing minutes of the game and walked away with a 5-0 shutout over the College of Idaho.
