The Eastern Washington University cross country teams opened up the 2021 season today (Sept. 3) with the Clash of the Inland Northwest meet, which was hosted by the Eagles on Eastern's campus in Cheney, Wash.
"It's nice to just see runners back out here again. We picked a perfect day, so the weather is always nice when it cooperates. I think all the teams are just happy to get out and race one another again," said head coach
Sam Read. "We did a workout on this course on Tuesday, so our team knew the ups and downs. It's not an easy course, but it's a fun one."
The women placed third out of seven teams in their 4k race with 92 points, finishing behind Gonzaga (28 points) and Idaho (38 points) but ahead of Big Sky Conference foe Montana (120). Overall, the Eagles finished 11-12-22-23-24 (31) and were led by a pair of freshmen in Nicole Deherrera (11
th, 15:00.9) and
Loren Linnenburger (12
th, 15:07.4).
"Our women closed the gap on another Big Sky team in Montana and that bodes really well for us in the future, but it's only one performance. We have to replicate it a few times to really get to where we want to be and for our goals, but it's the right step," added Read on the women's performances. "We had a few new faces in our top-five, and I know that we have some depth with others that are getting back into fitness or sitting out with injuries, so we have more people coming, too. I'm really excited for our women."
On the men's side, the Eagles raced a 6k and finished fourth out of seven teams with 94 points behind Gonzaga (15 points), Idaho (73 points) and Montana (83 points). The Eagles finished 9-14-20-21-30 (33) (39) and were led by sophomore
Justin Roosma (12th, 18.57.7).
"On our men's side, we had a really solid four. We had two freshmen guys right up there that ran a little bit fearless and like freshmen, and it came back to bite them a little bit, but at the same time, it's great to see that fearlessness in them," said Read. "We had some strong returners in
Justin Roosma and
Carter Ledwith. We just have to pull that five together, and we'll have a really strong team come Big Sky Championships."
The Eagles are back in action at the Cougar Classic this Friday, Sept. 10, at the Colfax Golf Club in Colfax, Wash.
