Eagles Host Old Foe Thunderbirds Monday Night

Eastern Washington will look to start 3-0 this season

Coming off a huge road win, Eastern Washington women's basketball will be at Reese Court Monday night (Nov. 14). Eastern hosts former Big Sky member, Southern Utah, at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

Last Time Out
Eastern Washington added another signature victory this past week, with an 83-74 win over Boise State in Boise, Idaho. The win over Boise State was Eastern Washington's first since Dec. 20, 2013 in Cheney. It is also the program's first win over a Mountain West school since defeating Air Force on Nov. 14, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
 
Eastern jumped ahead of the Broncos in the first quarter, with a 21-12 lead. The Broncos would cut the lead down to 36-34 at halftime and tied the game up at 58 after three quarters. The Eagles saved their best shooting until the fourth quarter, going 8-of-16(50%) from the floor. Eastern pulled away from Boise St. at the end of the game, as they converted its free-throw opportunities.
 
Jaydia Martin scored 17 points, with Aaliyah Alexander adding 14. Jamie Loera and Jacinta Buckley gave the Eagles four players in double figures after scoring 11 points apiece. Jaleesa Lawrence added nine points for Eastern as well. With aggressive defense, the Eagles forced 20 Bronco turnovers and scored 29 points off those opportunities.
 
A Look at the Eagles
Eastern Washington is off to a strong start this season with a 2-0 record and an average margin of victory of 24 points. The Eagles average a plus-14 turnover margin this season, averaging nine lost and forcing 23 from opponents. The team is averaging 15.5 steals per game. Martin leads the team with seven steals, while Alexander and Loera each have five.
 
Eastern has three players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Martin who has scored 17 points in each of the team's first two games. Alexander has a 14.5 points per game average, while Loera adds 10.5 points per game.
 
As a team, the Eagles are shooting 45.2 percent from three-point range. Martin and Alexander are both shooting 55.6 percent from three, while Loera is lighting it up with a 66.7 percentage.
 
Adding to the offensive versatility, Buckley is averaging 9.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. Buckley is tied for the team lead with Loera in rebounds per game.
 
Andie Zylak maintains her spot as a key contributor for Eastern, leading the team with nine assists and is averaging 5.5 points per game, while ranking third with seven rebounds.
 
Eastern was selected sixth in the Big Sky preseason coaches' poll leading up to the 2022-23 season. Eastern was picked to finish eighth in the preseason media poll. The team finished ninth in the Big Sky standings last season.
 
Scouting the Thunderbirds
Southern Utah has a 2-1 record early in the season. The Thunderbirds dropped their last game in a road contest against Gonzaga on Saturday, 38-91. In the team's first game of the season, Southern Utah defeated New Mexico at home, 76-68. The team's second win was a 102-60 win over Benedictine University at Mesa.
 
Lizzy Williams, a redshirt-junior center, led the T-Birds against Gonzaga, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Junior guard Daylani Ballena scored 13 points in the game as well.
 
Series History
Eastern Washington has a 12-12 record against Southern Utah in program history, going 7-6 against the T-Birds at Reese Court. Southern Utah has won the last four games in the series, including a 55-38 win at Reese Court this past February. The T-Birds departed the Big Sky Conference this past season and now are affiliated with the Western Athletic Conference.
