Eagles Close Road Trip against Ranked Ducks

Eastern Washington will play its final road non-conference game of the season against a top-20 team

Classes might be done for the year, but Eastern Washington women's basketball is hard at work this week with its second road game in three days. The Eagles travel to Eugene, Ore. to play No. 15/16 Oregon on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

Last Time Out
Eastern was on the court Tuesday night (Dec. 13) against Seattle and the Eagles defeated the Redhawks, 66-60. The Eagles went into halftime with a 27-20 lead and extended their advantage to 49-38 after the third quarter. In the fourth, Seattle rallied with a 10-0 run and the Eastern lead was down to only two points. Aaliyah Alexander found room in the paint for a timely layup and Jacinta Buckley would make four free throws to keep the Eagles on top and secure the win.

As a team, Eastern had a productive night at the free throw line, going 20-of-30(66.7%) for a season-high in both makes and attempts. The Eagles also scored 17 points off of 24 Seattle turnovers.

Jaydia Martin showed her scoring ability, pouring in 23 points on 5-of-9(55.6%) shooting from behind the arc. Martin was 7-of-13(53.8%) overall for the game and recorded her seventh career 20-point game, along with her fourth career game with five or more made three-point shots. Jamie Loera would score 11 points and had six rebounds in the game as well.

A Look at the Eagles
Eastern Washington is riding a two-game win streak as they prepare for its final two non-conference games. The team is 6-2 this season, with a 2-1 road record and 4-1 at home. This season, Eastern has a plus-14.1 scoring margin to lead the Big Sky and nearly double the margin of the second ranked team, Montana State's average (7.9). The Eagles have the second ranked scoring offense (72.9) and third ranked scoring defense (58.8). The offensive highlighted by the Eagles spreading the ball around to multiple players, as the team averages 14.9 assists per game. To help the offense, the defense is opportunistic, averaging 12.0 steals per game to lead the conference and recording 96 total this season.

Jamie Loera is the Big Sky leader in steals, with 3.3 per game and 26 total. The graduate transfer recorded five steals against Southern Utah (11/14) and Tarleton State (12/10) earlier this season. As the team's main facilitator, Loera is second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0) and sixth in assists per game (4.0). Loera is 15th in the conference with an 11.6 points per game average and is second on the team.

Leading the team in scoring is Jaydia Martin, as the sophomore averages 15.4 points per game, tying for seventh on the Big Sky leaderboard. Martin does her damage from three-point range averaging 2.9 made shots a game, with 23 total this season. She has a 45.1 percent shooting percentage from behind the arc for the third best mark in the conference. Martin's three-point shooting accounts for 56.1 percent of her made field goals this season. The Vancouver, Wash. native holds a 44.6 overall shooting percentage to list eighth in the Big Sky.

Jacinta Buckley goes about her job with consistent effort, leading the team with 6.9 rebounds per game, which is tied for the ninth-spot in the conference. Buckley is third on the team and 19th in the Big Sky with 10.9 points per game.

Scouting the Ducks
Oregon is 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in Pac-12 play after winning their most recent game against Oregon State by a score 75-64 (Dec. 11). The Ducks hold a 5-0 record at home, going 1-0 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites. Their one loss came against No. 8 North Carolina (79-85) on Nov. 24. Like Eastern Washington, Oregon has also played Seattle U (Nov. 12) and Southern Utah (Nov. 21), winning those games by scores of 90-47 and 66-54, respectively.
 
The Ducks are ranked 15th in the nation in the WBCA Coaches Poll, placing 16th in the AP Top 25. They average 83.6 points per game to rank 11th in Division I, shooting 52.9% from the field to rank 13th. Oregon dishes out 21.0 assists per game to rank seventh in the nation. They are also in the top 10 nationally in three-point percentage (eighth, 40.1%) and turnovers per game (ninth, 11.9).
 
Oregon has a balanced scoring attack, with all five starters averaging 9.8 points or more. They are led by senior guard Endyia Rogers, who averages 14.8 to go along with 4.4 assists. Sophomore center Phillipina Kyei averages 10.1 rebounds and has recorded three double-doubles on the season.

Series History
Eastern is 0-5 against Oregon in program history. The two teams last met in Eugene, Ore., on Nov. 21, 2017. The Ducks claimed the victory by a score of 81-40.

Eagles Against the Pac-12
Eastern is 8-59 against the Pac-12 Conference after falling to Oregon State, 66-73, earlier this season (11/17).
