Final Results.

The first day of the WSU invitational got underway today (Feb. 3) in Spokane, Wash., at The Podium.

Today started out with the men's heptathlon which will conclude tomorrow. The women's pentathlon started and concluded today.

Maggie Nelson was the only athlete from Eastern Washington University that competed today, where she competed in the women's pentathlon.

Nelson set an EWU school record today placing her first for the pentathlon on the EWU all-time top-ten list in the record book. She placed fifth overall at the pentathlon with 3,604 points. This is also second in the Big Sky Conference currently. Her total points from today's meet improved her previous place of fourth on the all-time top-ten list in the EWU record book where she had 3,425 points. The previous record of 3,597 points was set in 2019 by Dominique Butler.

"Couldn't have started a meet better than a school record performance. I am so proud of Maggie. She is one determined tough competitor," explains women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg.

She also had personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (18th, 9.71, 767 pts), high jump (T-8th, 5-2 1/2, 724 pts), and the 800-meter (7th, 2:28.85, 707 pts). Nelson also placed first in the women's shot put with a mark of 41-9 1/4, and sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18-0 1/4 for 697 points.

"For a multi-event athlete, it's not common to have multiple personal event best performances and for Nelson, she had three of five and the other two were within an inch of her best ever," stated jumps and multi-events coach Dave Nielsen.

Eastern Washington University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete tomorrow (Feb. 4) at the second day of the WSU Invitational as well as the WSU Open at The Podium in Spokane, Wash.
