Eagle Tennis Drops Short to Portland State, 5-2

Scout Mathews and Kenzington Mann pick up wins for the Eagles

BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team fell to Portland State in today's Big Sky matchup, 5-2. The Eagles are now 3-11 overall and 2-4 in conference.

"It was a disappointing result for the team today," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "It wasn't for the lack of effort, but I know we are capable of more. We just need to keep working and trying to overcome with grit and determination."

Isabella Foshee and Yasmin Mansouri opened up doubles competition on the first court and lost 1-6 before Jennifer Kida and Scout Mathews tied the score with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Kenzington Mann and Renata Gabuzyan fought well at No. 2, leaving the match in a 6-4 Eagle loss as the Vikings took the doubles team point.

Kida competed at No. 1 in singles play and won the first set, but lost in three long sets (6-2, 3-6, 0-6), followed by Mathews at No. 2 who tabbed an Eagle victory, winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3). Mansouri battled tough but fell in two sets (4-6, 5-7) at No. 3, as well as Gabuzyan, who found success at No. 4 dominating set two (6-0) and fell in set three (4-6). Foshee competed in the No. 5 spot, falling in two sets (3-6, 7-6(2)), as Mann picked up an Eagle win (6-3, 6-3) to add on an extra point for EWU.

"Scout Mathews had a great performance today, with really good wins in doubles and singles," said Hinson. "She showed tremendous heart and was able to pull out a close three-set battle in singles. Kenzington Mann was really impressive in singles as well and was able to come out on top with a dominant performance. We are looking forward to a couple more matches at home over the next two weeks."
