"Obviously, today didn't go according to plan. We prepped really intentionally to build forward from Thursday's historical effort at Oregon State, with specific emphasis on holding the high standard defensively in ball pressure and defending runners in the box," head coach
Missy Strasburg said. "We came into today with a very healthy respect for Portland and expected a tough test. Unfortunately, we didn't play to our standard as individuals or collectively as a team. We learned what many teams need to learn early in the season;Â that winning is hard. Consistent execution from match to match is hard, and that consistency of effort and attention to detail in the processes of the game are vital to getting results. We have it in us to do these hard things. So as a staff and a team, we will be refocusing our effort and preparation this week to respond Thursday with a performance that more accurately demonstrates the qualify and mentality we know this team possesses."Â
Starting off the game, the Eagles were quick to get into Pilot territory and threatening to score.
Madison Kem took control on offense getting ready to put the Eagles up in the first minute of play. The Pilots managed to save the precision shot from Kem to keep the match scoreless.
Gillian Martin also threatened Portland in the 18
th minute but missed her shot wide right.
The Pilots were quick to bounce back from the Eastern scoring opportunity. They scored the first goal of the match, as MJ Roe put Portland on top, with the assist by Cally Togiai at the 22-minute mark. After the first goal, the Pilots continued to pressure Eastern's starting goalie,
Kiara Matson. Portland scored again at the 30-minute mark to push the lead to 2-0. They added another goal for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Pilots scored three more goals, coming in the 53
rd, 58
