Eagles top Diggers in preseason tune-up

Eastern Washington prepared for the 2023-24 regular season with an exhibition against Montana Tech

CHENEY, Wash. — Eagle fans had their first look at the 2023-24 Eastern Washington women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, hosting Montana Tech. Eastern defeated the Diggers, 80-49, at Reese Court.

The Eagles were led by redshirt-sophomore Aaliyah Alexander who had a game-high 23 points in the game, shooting 43.8 (7-of-16) from the floor. Junior Alexis Pettis scored 16 points off the bench, shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) and 4-of-6 from three point range. 

The game opened with a 10-3 run from the Eagles, with four different players scoring. Montana Tech pulled the score back and the game would remain close until half. Eastern held a 31-27 advantage at the break, shooting 40.7 percent from the floor. 

In the third quarter, Alexis Pettis connected for three-straight, three-pointers to extend the Eagle lead to 47-36.  EWU extended the lead to 55-41 by the end of the quarter following free throws from Alexander and Jaleesa Lawrence

Eastern shot 52.9 percent in the fourth quarter to blow the game open. The team finished with a 43.3 shooting percentage for the game, earning the 31-point win. 

Jacinta Buckley led the team with a game-high seven rebounds, along with four blocks. Jamie Loera dished out six assists for the game's high mark, adding a pair of steals. 

For the game, EWU had a 47 to 25 rebounding advantage, out-scoring the Diggers in the paint, 30 to 18.

Up Next
The regular season begins for Eastern Washington on Nov. 8 when the team travels to Cedar City, Utah to play Southern Utah. The game tips-off at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
