SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Eastern Washington women's soccer continued its extended road trip on Friday, playing Sacramento State. Eastern dropped the game 1-0 after the Hornets scored a late goal to break the scoreless tie. The Eagles' record drops to 1-2-1 in the Big Sky and 2-10-1 overall.
"The result today is a frustrating one, coming off a very unfortunate bounce that resulted in a ball-to-hand penalty kick goal for Sac. St. But we are really proud of the effort and commitment from our group today, in an extremely difficult environment," head coach
Missy Strasburg. "We defended nearly perfectly for the full 90. We have a quick turnaround this weekend and look forward to responding at Portland State on Sunday."
Neither team found the net during the first 45 minutes. Sac. St. tallied 13 shots in the half, but put only two on net. The Eagles had three shots, with Maddie Morgan accounting for two, including one on net.
Morgan had an opportunity early in the second half to score, putting a shot on target in the 49th minute, but it was saved by the Hornets' Izzy Palmatier. Elisabeth Cole would also fire a shot on net in the 66th minute, but it was saved again by Palmatier.
In the 76th minute, Sac. St. drew a penalty inside the box on an Eastern handball. The Hornets' Erika Tilford converted the penalty kick for the first score of the game and Sac. St. had the lead.
Morgan's third shot on goal came in the 86th minute, after the team earned a corner kick. The shot was saved and Morgan was denied the equalizer. She finished with five shots overall.
The Hornets kept their lead and earned the home win over Eastern.
