Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second-half surge from Cougars downs Eagles in opener

Eastern Washington scored first, but fell to Washington St. in the team’s first game of the season

PULLMAN, Wash. — The first game of the 2023 season was the tale of two halves for Eastern Washington women's soccer. The Eagles fell to Washington State, 3-1, in Pullman on Thursday night.

"First it goes without saying the team is obviously disappointed with the final result. We prepared incredibly hard over the summer, committed to coming into this season fitter and stronger than we have in years past," head coach Missy Strasburg said. "That off-season preparation, experience and discipline gave us an awesome opportunity to compete tonight. We scored a fantastic early goal that put us in a solid position to win this game. I think this is the most talented and balanced WSU team they've had since their Final Four year."

Eastern struck first in the game, as Grace Terrill scored in the 10th minute to grab the lead.

Terrill's goal developed as Maddie Morgan dribbled the ball at the top of the box and passed to Gillian Martin on the right side. Martin found an unchecked Terrill on the far post who put her shot past the goalie for the 1-0 advantage.

Kamryn Willougby maintained the lead for the Eagles in the first half, making a pair of saves to hold off a strong WSU attack.

The Cougars found their offense in the second half, tying the game in the 63rd minute and then taking the lead in the 64th. WSU added an insurance goal in the 76th minute to give them a two-goal advantage.

"We did a great job absorbing their aggressiveness and mentality for a majority of the match. We just made a couple of small errors within minutes of each other in the second half, and an explosive team like WSU is going to capitalize on those mistakes," Strasburg added. "We learned a lot in this season opener and we know we will continue to grow individually and collectively as a team. We have a lot of season left and we are so excited about the potential this team holds."
