Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morgan, Eagles shatter records in rout of Argos

The 16-1 win marked the most goals in a single game in Eastern Washington’s history

CHENEY, Wash. — Through a rainy 90 minutes of action, Eastern Washington women's soccer dominated its home pitch. Eastern defeated the University of Providence-Great Falls, 16-1 on Thursday night at EWU Soccer Field.

The Eagles set a program record with 16 goals, doubling the previous record of eight goals against Idaho State in 2018.

"I think energy wise we were pretty frustrated after last Thursday and ready to uncork. We've scored good goals and had multi-goal games this season. Scoring against quality opponents has not been an issue, but walking away from Thursday was tough for everyone. This was a good bounce back moment," head coach Missy Strasburg said. "We talked a lot about just efficiency. It's not just about creating chances, but finishing them at a higher rate. We were able to get good reps in several different facets today. We attacked the central seams in the first half and in the second half, we had a lot of success as we put some restrictions on ourselves that will help against SDSU on Sunday.."

Seven different players scored for Eastern, led by a record-setting performance from Maddie Morgan with five goals, the most in a single-game in EWU history. There were three previous times in EWU history that a player scored the previous single-game mark of three goals. The most recent came from Savannah Hoekstra against Utah State in 2016.

"[Morgan] scored a really good goal at Washington and she was feeling ready," Strasburg explained. "In previous years, she has been a little slow out of the gate, but finds herself and turns it on at the backend of the year. She carries a lot of responsibility and accountability, along with leading by example. It's good for her to relieve that pressure today"

Eastern had a 2-0 lead after the first 10 minutes and extended it to 8–0 by halftime. Gillian Martin scored a pair of goals to lead the attack in the first 45 minutes.

Out of the break, Morgan scored four of her goals in seven minutes, with two coming on penalty kicks.

The Argos would end the shutout in the 54th minute. The score was quickly answered by Kendall Moore in the 55th minute.

Delani Walker would add her second and third goals in the final three minutes of the game to bring the total to 16 goals for Eastern.

Eagle Notes
