Tigers top Eagles on final day of tournament

Eastern Washington struggled on offense and fell to the Tigers

CHENEY, Wash. — On the final day of the EWU Tournament, Eastern Washington played host to Pacific in the final game of the weekend at Reese Court. Pacific defeated Eastern, 3-0, getting enough offense to go undefeated during the tournament. The Eagles fall to 2-4 on the season after the result today.

Sage Brustad finished with a game-high 12 kills, hitting .119. The senior posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 digs. Bri Gunderson was named to the all-tournament team after recording 20 kills and 12 total blocks in 10 sets played. Makenna Collins finished with 12 digs against the Tigers and she has double-digit digs in five-straight games.

Pacific gained the early lead in the first set and continued to score well. Eastern had three kills from Brustad, but struggled with six errors in the set. The Tigers went up 1-0 in the game after a 25-17 win in the first set.

The Eagles looked to rebound in the second set and built out a 13-9 lead. Brustad continued to swing aggressively, notching six kills in the set. Eastern held a 19-13 lead after a kill from Kalista Lukovich. With EWU leading 21-15, Pacific then ripped off an 11-3 run to steal the set. The Eagles improved to hit .263 in the set, but the Tigers were hitting .295 in the set to get the win and a 2-0 lead in the game.

Now in the third set, Pacific was focused on ending the game early. Eastern again struggled with attack errors, suffering from 13 in the set. The Tigers were limited to only .094 hitting, but it was enough to get the set win. Pacific went on to win 25-14 and earn the 3-0 win over Eastern. 

Up Next
Eastern travels to Portland, Ore. next weekend for three games in the University of Portland Tournament. The Eagles will play Cal State Northridge and Wyoming on Friday, Sept. 8, followed by a game against the host, Portland, on Saturday, Sept. 9.
