Eagles get first Big Sky win behind goals from Morgan, Arribas

Eastern Washington snapped its six-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon

OGDEN, Utah — Getting a road win is always important and Eastern Washington women's soccer earned that result on Sunday against Weber State. Eastern won 2-1 against the Wildcats to bring their record to 1-1 in the Big Sky and 2-9 overall.

The Eagles had goals from Maddie Morgan, along with Riley Arribas' first career score. Kiara Matson came off the bench in the second half and made five saves for Eastern to hold their one-goal lead.

"We could not be more proud of this group of women. It has been a challenging start to this season for us. For this team to stick together, keep working, fighting, and to come out with a gritty performance, and road win today, is exceptional," head coach Missy Strasburg said. "Maddie Morgan's goal was pure class. Riley Arribas's first college goal ends up the winner and the entire back line was connected and committed today. It was a true team effort that will give us great momentum and confidence going into Thursday's home clash with Montana."

Weber St. scored right out of the gate in the 3rd minute, scoring on the low center of the goal. Eastern trailed 1-0 in the game.

The response from the Eagles came in the 17th minute, as Morgan would again provide the equalizer. Off a free kick, Corina Froehle launched the ball to Morgan and fired a shot over WSU's Tayiah Lambert's head. The game was now even at 1-1.

Madison Kem would land a shot on target in the 24th minute, but it was saved by Lambert. After the first 45, the game was tied.

Eastern earned its key corner kick in the 57th minute. The ball flew in towards the net from Elisabeth Cole and it rebounded out of the box where Arribas was waiting. The sophomore quickly fired the shot from distance into the left corner of the net and past the Wildcat defenders for the goal. The Eagles were now leading WSU, 2-1.

The Wildcats pushed the tempo trying to get their equalizer, recording nine shots following the Arribas goal, but Matson and the Eastern defense had the answer each time. WSU recorded 15 total shots in the second half, but the Eagles would go on for the 2-1 victory.

Eagle Notes
  • Maddie Morgan scored her 13th goal of the season and is now second on the all-time single-season scoring list. She is two goals away from tying Chloe Williams for the most goals in a single-season. The goal is also Morgan's 28th career score.
  • Riley Arribas scored her first career goal in her 29th appearance in an Eastern uniform.
  • Kiara Matson earned her first career win after playing the entire second half against Weber St.
  • Eastern had a 7-5 shot advantage in the first half against the Wildcats. WSU's 15 shots in the second half left the shot differential at 20-9 for the game against the Eagles.
