Eagles control the glass, surge past Mountaineers in final exhibition

Eastern Washington holds final test before season opener next week

CHENEY, Wash. — Next stop is the regular season for Eastern Washington women's basketball as the team hosted Eastern Oregon for its final exhibition of the preseason. Eastern defeated the Mountaineers, 81-61, on Sunday afternoon at Reese Court. 

Eastern was working off the rust in the first quarter, and the Mountaineers shot well to start. Eastern Oregon had a 18-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Midway through the second quarter, the Eagles began to find their shooting. EWU would outscore the Mountaineers, 26 to 11 in the quarter and lead 37-29 at the half. Eastern shot 47.6 percent in the quarter, while holding a 30-19 rebound advantage in the first half. They accounted for 14 offensive rebounds as well. Overall, Eastern shot 31.8 percent from the floor.

The teams battled in the third quarter, with the Eagles narrowly outscoring the Mountaineers, 24-23. Eastern shot 52.6 percent. Eastern Oregon shot 40.7 percent from the floor, including 56.3 percent from three-point range. 

EWU separated in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points to Eastern Oregon's 9. The team went on to win 81-61, shooting 38.3 percent from the floor. 

Peyton Howard led the Eagles with 14 points on 6-of-13(46.2%) shooting. Howard was one of four Eastern players scoring in double figures. 

Jaecy Eggers scored 13 points and led the team with 12 rebounds, getting seven on the offensive end. 

For the game, Eastern had a 54 to 33 advantage in rebounds.
