This Week in Eastern Athletics: March 5 - March 10

Men’s and Women’s basketball head to Boise as regular season champs. Women’s tennis travels to Portland and women’s soccer continues its spring

CHENEY, Wash. — March madness has already begun for Eastern Washington athletics, claiming two titles this past week. The men's and women's basketball teams won the Big Sky regular season championship and head to Boise for the conference tournament next week. Both teams begin postseason play next Sunday. Women's tennis travels to Portland for a pair of matches and women's soccer has a short road trip for its second spring match. 

Men's Basketball (15-8, 9-1 Big Sky) — vs. #9/#10 Winner (Sunday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. PT)

The Eagles closed out the regular season on a four-game winning streak after wins versus Montana, Montana State and Sacramento State last week. It marks their second-straight season as conference regular season champions and sixth time in program history.

They head to Boise as the top seed, ready to face the winner of #9 Idaho vs. #10 Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon. Eastern went 2-0 against both potential opponents this year.

Women's Basketball (26-5, 16-2 Big Sky)  — vs. #9/#10 Winner (Sunday, March 10 at 11 a.m. PT)

Eastern secured the Big Sky regular season title on Monday night, winning 72-59 over Sacramento State. The team also celebrated senior night for Gabrielle Jung, Milly Knowles, Jacinta Buckley and Jamie Loera. The Eagles swept the Montana road trip, beating the Grizzlies and Bobcats in the final seconds on clutch shots from Buckley and Loera respectively.

EWU is currently on a 10-game winning streak and will play the winner of the #9 Weber State and #10 Portland State game. Eastern swept the season series against both the Wildcats and Vikings this year.

Women's Tennis (3-8, 1-0) — at Portland (Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time), at Portland State (Sunday, March 10 at 11 a.m.)

Eastern heads west for two matches against a conference and non-conference opponent. The Eagles start against the Portland Pilots on Friday and stay in the Rose City to play Portland State Vikings on Sunday.

EWU defeated Whitman College this past Sunday (March 3) with a 6-1 win. The Eagles won the doubles point to start and followed with five-straight wins. Leandra Nizetic had a commanding win at No. 3 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Ilina Jha. Kenzington Mann won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1 over Julia Longpre.

Women's Soccer — at Gonzaga (Wednesday, March 6 at 2:45 p.m.)

EWU plays its second game of its spring schedule this week, making the short trip up to Spokane to play Gonzaga. Eastern will play five games total this spring, with three home contests still on the schedule. 

The Eagles host the University of British Columbia on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. Eastern next hosts Bellevue College on April 20 at 2 p.m. and Central Washington on April 27 at 1 p.m.
