CHENEY, Wash. — Spring Break is over for Eastern Washington and the Eagles are getting back to work. Women's tennis has its final two road matches this week, while men's travels for one in Arizona. Track and Field stays close to home with a local meet. Soccer hosts its first spring match at EWU Soccer Field on Saturday and volleyball's spring schedule starts up. Spring practice is back for Football, with two practices and one scrimmage this week.
Track & Field — at Whitworth Peace Meet (Friday, April 5, All Day)
Eastern has a short road trip this Friday as they return to Spokane for the Whitworth Peace Meet. The competition will run all day at Whitworth University.
The Eagles went into Spring Break with momentum after posting strong results at the Oregon Preview. Ryan Rieckmann continued to move up the program's performance list in javelin, recording a 71.51m throw in Eugene. The mark moved him into second on the EWU top 10 lists and is currently ranked second in the Big Sky this season.
Madelyn Knight made her own move up the top 10 list in the 100m hurdles, now sitting at number two after recording a time of 14.11 in Oregon. Savannah Schultz holds the top spot in the Big Sky for pole vault after a 3.85m mark. Owen Higgins ran the 800m in 1:51.30 and is now 10th on the program's top 10 lists, along with taking the top spot in the conference this season.
Women's Tennis (3-13, 1-4) — at Idaho State (Friday, April 5 at 12 p.m.), at Weber State (Sunday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m.)
The Eagles close out their road schedule this weekend, playing two conference matches. The team begins in Pocatello against the Bengals on Friday, followed by a drive down to Ogden to play the Wildcats on Sunday.
This past week, Eastern was in Flagstaff, Ariz. to play Northern Arizona. EWU fell 6-1 in the match, dropping the six singles matches. The team started strong after securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2. Isabella Foshee and Scout Mathews, playing at 1, defeated Daryna Shoshyna and Dolavee Tumthong, 6-4. At No. 2, Anait Arutiunian and Jennifer Kida grabbed a 6-3 win over Laura Duhl and Pat Niewiadomska.
Foshee and Mathews lead the Eagles with seven wins in doubles, while Arutiunian and Kida have six. Foshee leads the team in singles wins with seven.
Men's Tennis (0-12, 0-3) — at Northern Arizona (Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. PT)
Eastern gets back to the courts this Saturday as they travel to Flagstaff to play the Lumberjacks. The match will be the Eagles' fourth conference contest this season.
EWU was last in action two weeks ago at the Boise State Spring Fling Tournament. In Boise, the Eagles dropped three matches against Illinois State (0-4), Boise State (0-4) and Idaho (0-5). Tyler Waddock and Erik Sarlvik earned a win in doubles against the Vandals, defeating Yu-Shun Lai and Taiyo Kurata, 6-2.
Soccer — vs. University of British Columbia (Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m.)
Eastern Washington hosts the Thunderbirds in the first of three home matches the team has this spring. The Eagles have a week off before hosting Bellevue College on April 20 and Central Washington on April 27. The Eagles have already played two matches this spring against Washington State and Gonzaga.
In the 2023 season, Eastern was 2-14-1 overall, going 1-6-1 in the Big Sky. The Eagles had two representatives on the All-Conference team with Maddie Morgan and Madison Kem earning the postseason honors.
Volleyball — at Central Washington (Saturday, April 6 at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time), vs. Alaska-Anchorage (Saturday, 2:45 p.m.)
EWU's spring schedule begins on Saturday with two matches in Ellensburg, Wash. The Eagles open against the home team, Central Washington, followed immediately after by a matchup against Alaska-Anchorage.
Eastern returns to the courts after going 13-17 in the fall and 6-10 in conference. The Eagles qualified for the Big Sky Tournament as the No. 7 seed. In Greeley, EWU knocked off the No. 2 seed and defending conference champions, Northern Colorado, 3-2 in the quarterfinals. The team then lost to No. 3 Montana State in the semifinals, 3-1.
Football — Spring Practice (Tuesday, April 2 and Thursday, April 4 at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m.)
Spring football continues this week after holding two practices prior to Spring Break last week. The Eagles will have two regular practices on Tuesday and Thursday, with Saturday working as the team's first scrimmage of the season.
Eastern will continue with this weekly schedule until the 2024 Red-White Game on Friday April 26 at 6 p.m. The game is free and open to the public to attend.
