EUGENE, Ore. – The Eagles showcased their strength on the final day of the Oregon Preview, securing four first-place finishes and adding six names to the EWU all-time list.
Maddy Shekhawat continued his momentum from indoor season, finishing first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08. This performance moved him to No. 2 all-time in Eastern's record book.
"Rain, rain, and more rain in the PNW," said
Erin Tucker, Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. "The rain stopped towards the end of the meet, but we expected it, and we still pushed through. Starting with Maddy, this young man won his race by almost a second in light rain. He wasn't happy he didn't break the school record, but he's now No. 2 all-time with the entire season ahead of him. We're officially on 110HH school record watch!"
Enoch Okoh had a solid start to his season in the men's 100m, finishing third with a time of 10.73. However, he found his rhythm in the 200m, dominating the race from the start and claiming first place with a time of 21.57. This was his first win for EWU.
"Hats off to Ms. Syd in the 400m hurdles," continued Tucker. "She just missed the top-10 list, but starting the year off with a 4-second PR is incredible. I'm happy to see that, and she knows there's more to come. Great win for her—her first in EWU history after three years here."
The meet closed with a strong performance in the 800m. On the men's side,
Owen Higgins finished third with a time of 1:50.95, while
Kaiya Sollie had a massive PR in the women's 800m, moving into ninth all-time with a fifth-place finish and a time of 2:14.30.
The women's 400m saw
Diana Fernandez lead the Eagles with a fourth-place finish and a time of 57.71. In the 400m hurdles,
Sydney Thweatt ran a PR of 1:02.95, finishing in first place, while
Magdalena Slomska followed in seventh with a time of 1:06.73.
"Good win for The Jump Queen, Egypt. The conditions weren't ideal for the long jump, but it was great to see her win. Like many other events, this is something to build on," Tucker added.
In the field events, Egypt
Caitlin Simmons triumphed in the long jump with a 6.00m leap, while Tuti
Kimberly Smith finished fourth.
Dyvhon Fonoti took third in the shot put with a throw of 42.03m, and
Dyvhine Fonoti finished sixth in the discus.
Suzi Woodall earned a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.73m.
Mason Moore also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 48.12m.
"All in all, a strong opener at the historic Hayward Field," Tucker concluded. "We'll get better from here. We learned a lot, and while we go on spring break, many athletes are staying in town to train. That commitment will help us perform better than we did indoors. Conference is just 9 weeks away—the timer has started! Go Eags!"
