CHENEY, Wash. — The 2023-24 Academic Progress Rate (APR) has been released by the NCAA today and Eastern Washington athletics has two programs earning perfect multiyear scores. Men's and women's tennis continued to lead the academic success for Eastern, each posting a 1,000 multiyear score during the current academic calendar year.

The APR is the annual standard of academic achievement that is calculated for all NCAA Division I sports.

Women's tennis earned a perfect APR score for the seventh consecutive year and the 10th in program history. Men's tennis marked its third consecutive year with a 1,000 multi-year score.

With two 1,000 scores added this year, Eastern has 42 perfect marks since 2004-05.

As a department, all 12 of EWU's programs carried a multiyear score above 930. The figure is the minimum threshold to maintain good academic standing with the NCAA for competition.

About the APR
While the idea of a more contemporary and accurate measure of a team's academic success sprouted in the early 2000s as part of a comprehensive reform effort, it wasn't until the 2004 NCAA Convention that what is now one of the most recognizable acronyms in the NCAA was officially adopted.

The APR, or Academic Progress Rate, holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.

The APR is calculated as follows:
  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team's current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
  • Teams must earn a four-year average APR of 930 to compete in championships.
