CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University men's basketball has announced its participation in the 509 Classic, a three-year series with Washington State University set to take place at Spokane's Veterans Memorial Arena. The inaugural matchup is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 17, marking the first of three annual showdowns between the regional rivals.
EWU and WSU have a long standing rivalry dating back to 1907, when Washington State College first met Cheney Normal School on the hardwood. WSU currently leads the all-time series, 59-13, with the Eagles claiming victory in just two of the last ten meetings. Notably, both of those wins came under the current WSU head coach David Riley during his successful tenure at Eastern.
"We're thrilled to bring Eastern basketball to Spokane for the 509 Classic," said EWU Head Coach Dan Monson. "This is more than just a game—it's an opportunity to showcase our program and connect with our passionate fan base, including more than 45,000 EWU alumni in the Inland Northwest. We're proud to help build a tradition that reflects the spirit of Eastern Washington and energizes the entire region."
Additional details—including ticketing, broadcast information, and community events surrounding the 509 Classic—will be announced soon.
