CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington and South Dakota finished the match in a draw.
Renee Sainz broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball off a corner kick to put the Eagles ahead. Goalkeeper
Kamryn Willoughby finished with three saves, including two in the second half. Overall, Eastern outshot the Coyotes 13-10, while South Dakota held a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
The match opened with a physical tone, as both teams battled for control in the first 15 minutes. Eastern managed three shots to South Dakota's two, with the Coyotes nearly striking first when a shot skimmed just over the crossbar. Minutes later, South Dakota forced the first save of the match, a comfortable stop for Willoughby.
Neither side gained momentum for the rest of the half, as both defenses held firm. Eastern led the shot count 6-4 at the break, while each team earned one corner kick.
The Eagles came out aggressive after halftime, earning a free kick less than two minutes in before South Dakota responded with another shot on target that Willoughby handled easily. Eastern then converted on a corner as Sainz cleaned up the loose ball to give EWU a 1-0 lead.
South Dakota answered in the 67th minute, leveling the score on a header off a corner kick. Both teams pushed for the winner, but the defenses stood tall, and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Eastern Washington (1-1-2) returns to action for Senior Day on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m. against UIC.
