CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington men's basketball is headed back to Spokane as the Eagles and Washington State renew their rivalry in the second edition of the 509 Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2026, at Numerica Veterans Arena.
The matchup marks the second year of a three-year agreement that brings the two in-state programs together in downtown Spokane, continuing what has quickly become one of the Inland Northwest's premier annual sporting events.
The inaugural 509 Classic in 2025 delivered an electric atmosphere and showcased the passion for college basketball throughout the region. The Cougars earned a 78-63 victory in the first meeting, but the Eagles will look to write a different ending when the rivalry returns to Spokane this December.
More than just a game, the 509 Classic celebrates the connection between two proud programs and the communities they represent. The event brings together fans from across Eastern Washington and the Inland Northwest, highlighting the shared enthusiasm for basketball and regional pride.
Eastern Washington head coach
Dan Monson is excited for the opportunity to once again showcase the Eagles on one of the Northwest's biggest stages.
"We're thrilled to bring Eastern basketball to Spokane for the 509 Classic," Monson said. "This is more than just a game—it's a chance to showcase our program and engage our passionate fan base, along with over 45,000 EWU alumni living in the heart of the Inland Northwest, as we build a tradition that celebrates everything Eastern Washington represents. We're excited to compete and be part of something that will energize the entire region."
Additional details, including ticket information, game time, game-day activities and community events surrounding this year's festivities, will be announced in the coming months.
