Career: He has career totals of 203 tackles, 31/2 sacks and three passes broken up, and is the 36th player inschool history to have at least 200 tackles. He currently ranks35th, and is just 28 tackles from moving into the top 20 and 85from the top 10. He has had seven performances of at least 10 stopsin his 34-game career. His 20 career starts are second on thedefense and fourth overall on the team entering the 2014season.

2014: Listed as the starter at middlelinebacker on the preseason depth chart. College Sports Madnessnamed him as a second team preseason All-Big Sky pick.

2013: Earned honorable mention All-Big Skyhonors. Started all 15 games at middle linebacker as he took overthe position held by Tyler Washburn, who played in a school-record51 games and had 259 tackles in his career. McCarthy finished with115 tackles to rank as the 13th-most in school history, including24 tackles in the last two games of the season. He had 11 in thequarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs against Jacksonville State(12/14/13) to earn team defensive player of the week honors, andthen had a career-high 13 in the semifinals versus Towson(12/21/13). Earlier in the year he had nine tackles versus WeberState (10/5/13) to earn team defensive player of the week honors.He led EWU with 11 tackles for losses totaling 41 yards in the 2013season.

2012: A backup in the 12 games he played,McCarthy was ninth on the team with 47 tackles. He had aseason-high 11 against Washington State (9/8/12) and had seven inthe FCS Playoffs versus Illinois State (12/8/12). He missed theSacramento State (10/20/12) and Southern Utah (10/27/12) games witha knee injury.

2011: Named to the Big Sky ConferenceAll-Academic team. The only true freshman to play on defense,McCarthy finished his injury-plagued year with 41 tackles in sevengames to rank ninth on the team. He had a team-high 12 tackles inEWU’s 42-35 overtime win over Sacramento State (10/22/11). Headded 10 a week later versus Portland State (10/29/11). McCarthyhad arthroscopic knee surgery during the preseason and didn’tmake his Eagle debut until the Montana game (9/17/11). He made thefirst start of his career at Northern Arizona (10/8/11) and hadfour tackles in his starting debut, a week after having sevenagainst Weber State (10/1/11). He missed EWU’s final game ofthe season against Idaho State (11/19/11).

HS: Graduated from Bishop Kelly HS in 2011.McCarthy was a four-year starter in high school and set schooltackle records in a career (377), season (177) and single game(24). A first team All-State selection as a junior and senior and asecond team pick as a sophomore, he was picked as Idaho’sGatorade Football Player of the Year in 2010 after leading hisschool to the 4A State title. He was also selected as one of 50players nationally as Old Spice National Player of the Year. As asenior, the Idaho Statesman picked him as its State 4APlayer of the Year. He was a two-time 4A Southern Idaho ConferenceDefensive Player of the Year and twice earned All-Idaho honors. Oneof the highest-rated recruits by scouting services that Eastern hasever signed, Scout.com rated him as a three-star recruit and theNo. 52 linebacker in the nation. Rivals.com rated him as the No. 36linebacker nationally. He played as a linebacker and fullback inleading the Knights to a 12-0 record, capped by a 41-28 victoryover Blackfoot on the blue turf at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho.He finished his senior season with a school-record 177 totaltackles, including 10 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. He also forcednine fumbles and intercepted four passes. On offense, he rushed for603 yards and seven touchdowns on 93 carries (6.5 per carry), andcaught 11 passes for 172 yards and three more scores. He wasawarded the MVP award for varsity linebackers in the 2010 BoiseState University team camp. As a junior, he had 151 tackles, 8 1/2sacks and two interceptions. He also rushed for 109 yards (12.1 perrush) and caught seven passes for 34 yards. Besides earning secondteam All-State honors as a sophomore, he was a second teamAll-Southern Idaho Conference linebacker. He became the firstplayer in school history to start all varsity games as a freshman.McCarthy also competed in track and field, and won the State 4Atitle in the shot put as a junior with an effort of 51-10. One meetearlier, he had a career-best 52-4 1/2. He placed third in theState in shot put as a freshman with a throw of 47-5 and seventh asa sophomore with a toss of 44-11 1/2. He had a 3.0 grade pointaverage in high school and volunteered on behalf of the Make-A-WishFoundation, an area homeless shelter and youth football camps.
