Biography

Career: After lettering in basketball forEastern Washington in the 2009-10 season under former head coachKirk Earlywine, Gibbs switched to football and lettered on specialteams for the Eagles in 2010 and as a starting cornerback in 2011.A 6-foot-3 guard on the basketball court, Gibbs finished his18-game football career with 36 total tackles, four passes brokenup and a forced fumble. Gibbs is the first Eagle to letter in bothsports since Bob Picard in the early 1970’s.

2011-12 Basketball: Having already lettered atEastern in both basketball and football, Gibbs re-joined thebasketball squad on Nov. 28, 2011, after head coach Jim Hayfordannounced three players (Willie Hankins, Rocky Brown and JustinOmogun) were no longer on the team.

2011 Football: Started nine games atcornerback, but missed two games with a broken thumb that requiredin-season surgery. Gibbs finished the season with 34 tackles (12thon the team) with four tackles for loss, four passes broken up anda forced fumble. He broke up a pass on a two-point conversion tryby Cal Poly to end the second overtime and preserve Eastern’s53-51 victory over the Mustangs on Nov. 12, 2011. Gibbs earned thestarting position in the spring by finishing with 12 tackles, aninterception and a team-high three passes broken up in four springscrimmages.

2010 Football: Played college football for thefirst time after moving from the Eagle basketball team to thefootball team. He lettered with his play on special teams, andfinished the year with a pair of tackles -- both against IdahoState (11/20/10). Was selected as the team’s defensive scoutteam player of the week twice.

2009-2010 Basketball: As a junior for theEastern basketball team in the 2009-10 season, he started 14 of 23games and averaged 2.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in an average of16.4 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 11 points againstTexas Arlington (11/21/09) and had 15 rebounds versus Walla Walla(12/1/09). His rebounding performance was the second-best for anEagle all season.

Junior College: While a basketball player atCollege of the Siskiyous in California, Gibbs was a CaliforniaCommunity College Athletic Association first-team All-Stateselection in the 2008-09 season. He averaged 17.0 points with ahigh game of 32 as a sophomore, to go along with averages of 11.1rebounds and 3.8 steals per game to rank second in the CCCAA. Hehad 150 offensive rebounds and more than 40 dunks in 30 games,earning first-team All-Golden Valley Conference honors. Gibbsaveraged 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals as afreshman, including three double-doubles with a high scoring outputof 25 points. He led the school to a 22-12 record in 2008-09 aftera 9-20 finish the year before.

High School: Graduated from Canarsie HS in2007. He helped lead his basketball team to the semifinals of the2006 A Division Playoffs in New York, losing 67-62 to the eventualchampion with a berth in the championship game at Madison SquareGarden on the line. The team finished 21-3 overall and 15-1 inleague play to advance to the semifinals of the Brooklyn BoroughPlayoffs.

More on Former Eastern Dual-Sport Basketball/FootballPlayers: Picard lettered in football in 1968, 1969, 1971and 1972, and also lettered in basketball in the 1972-73 season.Picard held Eastern’s career receiving record for 21 yearswith 166 catches (now sixth) that were good for 2,373 yards and 19touchdowns. His receiving record was broken by Tony Brooks in 1993.Picard had his No. 84 jersey retired, was inducted into the EasternAthletics Hall of Fame in 2003 and was selected  to the "100for 100" All-Time Football Team in 2008 to help commemorate the100th year of football at Eastern. In 27 career basketball games,Picard averaged 3.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists. He wenton to play three seasons (54 career games) in the National FootballLeague for the Philadelphia Eagles, and ended his career at thefirst training camp of the expansion Seattle Seahawks in 1976.Several other Eagles have played both football and basketball sincePicard, but none have lettered in both. Wide receiver JerroldJackson lettered in football from 1993-96, and played one minutefor the hoop squad in the 1995-96 season. All-America quarterbackHarry Leons lettered in football for three seasons from 1995-97,and was also on the basketball roster for a short time but did notplay. Henry Bekkering lettered in basketball for Eastern in the2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, and was also on the football roster in2003. He played in four football games that season as anon-lettering squad member, and averaged 56.5 yards on 27 kickoffs,while routinely kicking the ball into the end zone.
