Eastern Washington University head soccer coach Chad Bodnar announced the addition of Mackenzie German to his staff on March 21, 2019. The start of the 2020 season will be her second with the Eagles.
In her first season with the Eagles, German helped guide the team to an 11-8-2 overall record, including a 6-2-1 Big Sky record to finish third in the standings. The Eagles scored 33 goals in 2020, 17 of which came in conference play. During Big Sky action, EWU only allowed five.
German helped coach six Eagles to eight Big Sky honors, including the conference Defensive Player and Newcomer of the Year to go with three first-team selections. Eastern Washington qualified for the Big Sky tournament for the sixth-straight season. They advanced to the championship game after shutting out Portland State and upsetting Sacramento State in double overtime. The Eagles were edged by Northern Colorado in the championship game, 1-0.
Additionally, German helped coach goalkeeper Kelsee Winston pick up four-straight shutouts en route to becoming the program’s all-time leader in career shutouts as a junior.
German came to Eastern Washington after a stint at the Cook Inlet Soccer Club in Anchorage, Alaska, where she served as the Girls Academy Director and Staff Coach since March 2017. There, she was the head coach of the 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Girls Academy teams while developing curriculum and session plans for the Development Academy.
During that time, German also worked as a staff coach for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Anchorage. Throughout her tenure, she led and implemented session plans and helped lead the 2005 Girl’s ODP team to a Far West Regional League appearance and the ODP Championships.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Mackenzie to our staff. Her work ethic and the knowledge she’s gained as a player and a coach and various levels pushed her to the top of our search,” said Bodnar, who is entering his sixth-year at the helm. “Mackenzie’s personality and vision suit what we do here at Eastern Washington and we are looking forward to her getting started with our team.”
German played Division I soccer for four years at the University of Texas at El Paso where she was named captain and received Commissioners Academic Awards all four years. After graduation, she played semi-professionally in the WPSL for FC Tucson for three seasons. She was a two-time captain for the club, the youngest player to be named captain in FC Tucson history.
Following her playing career, German coached at the FC Tucson Youth Academy where she helped her team climb from a No. 32 ranking all the way the No. 2 spot during her time.
German has both a USSF “D” and “E” license and graduated from the University of Texas El Paso in May of 2015 with her Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology.
