Women's Tennis Earns Strong Wins Over Nevada And Whitman

Cheney, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team earned two wins this weekend, taking down visiting teams in Nevada (Friday, Jan. 29) and Whitman (Saturday, Jan. 30).

Eastern has now won three straight dual matches, and improves to 4-2 on the season. Nevada now sits at 1-3 on the season, while the loss was Whitman's first dual match of the season.

Earning the first victory of the weekend against the Wolfpack, 5-2, the Eagles started the match 1-0, taking the double point. Although the team of freshman Faye Worrall and sophomore Janaya Smith dropped to the team of Delic and Morales, 6-3, in the number one spot, EWU followed it up with two straight wins to seal the point. Junior Dani Young and junior Katrina Domingo defeated Herrero and Gergelyova 6-3, while the pairing of senior Moira Hedberg and junior Erin Blessing dominated Magusiak and Korzeniecki, 6-1.

Singles started off a little shaky, with the Eastern squad dropping two straight matches in the one and two spot, but the team came back to take victories in the remaining singles matches. Sophomore Rachel Swindell defeated Adriana Gergelyova 6-3, 7-6, and Young earned a tough victory over Blaga Delic 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Erin Blessing continued her fantastic play with a strong win, 6-0, 6-1 over Sara Korzeniecki, securing the match win over Nevada. To round things out, freshman Faye Worrall topped Monika Magusiak (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4)) in the No. 6 spot.

The next matchup came against Whitman on Saturday, Jan. 30, where Eastern finished the complete sweep, 7-0. The doubles competition was a dominate showing for EWU, with not one close match. Smith and Worrall defeated Greenberg and Hill 6-1, while the other teams of Hedberg and Blessing, and Young and Domingo, won their matches 6-1 and 6-0, respectively.

Smith won her first singles match of the weekend at the number one spot, taking down Jenna Dobrin 6-4, 6-3. Other match highlights include a tough, three set tiebreak win for Swindell over Cello Lockwood 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8), and Blessing, finishing a perfect 4-0 on the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lindsey Brodeck.

Head Coach Dustin Hinson shared his thoughts on this weekend's performances, "I'm very pleased coming out of our home opener weekend. We faced a very evenly matched Nevada team that we knew was going to be a battle and then one of the nation's best D3 teams. We started with strong doubles in both matches, which has been a huge boost for us so far this season. Beginning the match with a 1-0 lead and momentum has really been setting the tone for us going into singles. We had a lot of really tight moments in both matches and I believe it was our mental approach in these moments that ultimately put us on top at the end. We are playing in the moment and controlling the things we can control. We have a lot of work ahead before our conference home opener against NAU. The battles are just beginning this season and we are ready to work hard to show that we are up for the challenge."

Next up the Eagles host their Big Sky Conference opener against Northern Arizona, on Sunday, Feb. 7, starting at 3 p.m. PST.
