@EWUSoccer Falls On The Road To Northern Arizona 3-1

Williams scores EWU's only goal in first loss in two months

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team drops its first match in eleven games in a 3-1 finish with Big Sky Conference opponent Northern Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 16.

After a quiet first half on offense that only saw the Eagles tally three total shots, they found themselves down 1-0 heading into the second half. The offense ramped up the aggressiveness, putting up more shots on the NAU defense, and it finally paid off in the 77th minute. Given a one-on-one opportunity in the box, junior Chloe Williams came through with a goal to equalize the score.

But the tie did not last long, as the Lumberjacks answered almost immediately by scoring the game-winning goal just two minutes later. EWU would not be able to find its own answer in the closing minutes and the game would finish 3-1 in favor of Northern Arizona.

Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington falls to 10-2-3 and 4-1-2 in the Big Sky, while Northern Arizona improves to 6-7-3 and 3-2-2 in the BSC.

What it Means
It has been almost two months, but the Eagles finally lost their first game since the 3-1 defeat at the hands of UNLV on August 28. This was also the first loss in conference play for Eastern, who still remains in second place in the standings.

Keys to the Game
NAU stayed on top with a more efficient offensive performance by recording seven shots on goal in just nine total shots, compared to just four shots on goal for the Eagles.

Top Performers
Chloe Williams was the lone player to enter the scoring column for Eastern with one goal on four shots and two on goal.

Turning Point
It looked as if EWU could be heading for a second-straight overtime match when Williams tied the game with just 13 minutes remaining, but the Lumberjacks had other plans. They immediately capitalized with a game-winning goal from Ali Lixandru in the 79th minute.

Team Highlights
The Eagles managed to outshoot Northern Arizona, 13 shots to nine, and earned five more corner opportunities on the afternoon.

Notables
Chloe Williams once again extends her career points and goals mark at EWU with 71 and 28, respectively. On the season, Williams now has 11 goals and 25 points.

For the second time in her career, Williams tied the EWU all-time record for goals in a season with 11. With three games remaining she has a good chance to secure another program record to her name.

After just its second loss of the season, Eastern will still sit firmly behind Idaho in the Big Sky standings. The Vandals' 5-1-1 league record puts them two points ahead of the Eagles.

Bodnar Bites
"It was a tough weekend on the road for us for sure. We need to regroup and get going back the right way on Friday at home."

What's Next
The Eagles return home for a match against Northern Colorado on Friday, Oct. 21 starting at 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
