@EWUSoccer Drops Close Match To Northern Colorado 3-2

Eagles score two goals in its first home loss of the 2016 season

CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team had its five-game home win streak brought to an end in a 3-2, down-to-the-wire finish against Northern Colorado on Friday, Oct. 21.

The Eastern offense got moving quickly right from kickoff with its score-first mentality, and got on the board first in just the fourth minute of the contest. Junior Chloe Williams dropped the ball down to sophomore Allison Raniere, who found junior Delaney Romero on the cross, as she bulleted in the shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

In the 30th minute Northern Colorado tied up the game on a goal by Paige Morris, but EWU would break that tie not long after. In the 39th minute, junior Aimie Inthoulay took the 2-1 lead on a beautiful set piece that floated right over the Bears' goalkeeper.

In the second half, UNC would once again hit the equalizer off a Mariel Gutierrez goal in the 58th minute. However, there would be no answer for the Eagles this time, as Kenzie Engelkins would make the game-winning goal for Northern Colorado in the 80th minute.

Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington falls to 10-3-3 and 4-2-2 in the Big Sky Conference, while Northern Colorado improves to 9-7-1 and 4-4-0 in the BSC.

What it Means
After its first loss at home in 2016, Eastern still remains in the thick of Big Sky postseason contention. With two games remaining, the team ranks third in the league standings and still has the best overall record out of all conference teams.

Keys to the Game
UNC goalkeeper Alyssa McGuire was a large part of Northern Colorado's victory. Sher recorded six saves, including a diving stop on a laser from Chloe Williams in the 74th minute that would have given Eastern a 3-2 lead.

Top Performers
Aimie Inthoulay scored her first goal of the season on a free kick opportunity she played to perfection. She finished the game with three shots, all three on goal.

Delaney Romero scored the first goal of the match and her third of the season off assists from Raniere and Williams.

Chloe Williams recorded one assist in the match and five shots, three on goal.

Turning Point
In the 80th minute, the Bears found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead with just 10 minutes left, putting the Eagle offense on its heels. With UNC playing back on defense, EWU could not penetrate through the back line and hit the equalizer.

Team Highlights
The offense played with aggression all game, tallying eight shots on goal on 12 total shots, and five corners.

Notables
Eastern was the last remaining undefeated home team in the Big Sky this season, as it now has a 5-1 record in Cheney. With only three losses, EWU has the best home record in the Big Sky.

Aimie Inthoulay scored her first goal of the season and the third career goal in her two years with the program.

Delaney Romero scored her third goal of the season and the sixth of her career. She also has 15 career points.

Chloe Williams increased her all-time career assists record to 16, five above the previous record. Williams has now scored at least one point in seven of her last nine games.

Allison Raniere recorded her third assist of the season. She has five assists and 11 points in her two-year career.

Junior forward Savannah Hoekstra returned to the field today, after a seven-game hiatus due to injury. She is a big addition to the offense, having scored a hat trick at the beginning of the year.

Bodnar Bites
"I thought we were really good in the first half, and had chances to separate ourselves a little bit in that first period. We dropped off a bit in the second half, and gave up some soft goals on set pieces and balls bouncing around in the muddy field. We have to have a short memory though, and that game on Sunday is a big deal for us now."

What's Next
The Eagles finish off the weekend with a Big Sky Conference match on the road at North Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 23 starting at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
