Williams Breaks The @EWUSoccer All-Time Career Goals Record In Shutout Over Weber State

Chloe Williams scores five points on two goals and one assist, as EWU records its third-straight shutout in 3-0 win against WSU

CHENEY, Wash. – Another record in the books for Junior Chloe Williams, as she took sole possession of Eastern Washington's all-time career goals record with a score in the 18th minute of a 3-0 shutout over visiting Weber State on Sunday, Oct.  9.

Scoring opened in the 18th minute when junior Laci Rennaker hit a sprinting Chloe Williams down the middle of the field, setting her up for a fast break opportunity. Williams blew by the WSU defenders and beat the opposing goalie in a one-on-one to give EWU 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Williams was once again driving the ball and sent a cross over to the waiting Devan Talley as she punched in the goal for a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute. Involving herself on every Eastern score this afternoon, Williams would add on to her new record in the 71st minute with an absolute laser from 20-yards out. The Wildcats' goalkeeper had no shot at the save, and EWU would take the 3-0 win.

Before the game, Williams was tied with previous record holder Cassie Black (2011-14) at 24 career goals. She ended the afternoon at 26 goals in her three year career, and a total of three EWU all-time records. Entering this year, Williams was already the all-time assists leader and soon after became the all-time points leader. Those records now stand at 14 and 66, respectively.

"I think overall, that's our best 90 minutes of play this season," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Our defenders have been very-well organized the last three or four matches, and they've been picking up clean sheet after clean sheet. We scored some really, really nice goals today and had some nice combination plays on offense."

Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington improves to 10-1-2 and 4-0-1 in the Big Sky Conference, while Weber State drops to 5-7-1 and 3-3 in the BSC.

What it Means
The EWU defense continued its hot streak, recording its third straight-shutout.  The unbeaten streak improves to eight games as the Eagles have established themselves as the team to beat in the conference, with an undefeated record through five games.

Keys to the Game
The Eastern backline played a tremendous match, holding the Wildcat offense to just four shots through 80 minutes and a total of six shots with just two on goal.

The defense is now holding onto a season-best, 304 minute scoreless streak.

Top Performers
Chloe Williams had one of the most prolific offensive performances in EWU history, and added yet another record to her resume with the game-winning and record-breaking goal in the 18th minute. She scored five points on two goals and one assist.

Senior Mallory Taylor kept a clean sheet for her third-straight match, collecting two saves on the way to the win.

Sophomore Devan Talley scored her first goal of the 2016 season on her lone shot of the match.

Turning Point
With just a 1-0 lead in the second half, EWU needed one more goal to allow the defense to play comfortably. It only took to the 58th minute for Williams and Talley to combine for a drive, pass, and score for the 2-0 Eagle lead.

Team Highlights
The Eastern offense stayed aggressive against WSU, primarily keeping the ball on its side of the field the entire second half. EWU doubled Weber State's shots, finishing the game with 12 shots and four on goal.

Notables
This was the Eagles' 30th win in three seasons under head coach Chad Bodnar. They are 20-5-5 in the last two seasons.

After today's match Eastern has now scored three or more goals eight times this year, proving why it is the best offense in the Big Sky.

It is safe to say Chloe Williams is now the greatest scorer in EWU soccer history after taking control of the all-time goals record with 26. She also improved her all-time assist record to 14 and her all-time points record to 66.

On the season, Williams has 20 points on nine goals and two assists.

The Eagles recorded their fifth shutout in the last seven games, and improved their season total to six. Eastern has tied its previous team best of six shutouts in one season. Mallory Taylor is credited for five of those shutouts, and increases her career total to seven.

Devan Talley scored her fist goal of the season and the fourth of her career. She has four points on one goal and two assists this season, and has 13 career points on four goals and five assists.

Bodnar Bites
On Chloe's Five-Point Day: "I think our field helps Chloe because it is a big pitch and it helps her find spots to get in behind people. Chloe was able to slide by a defender on that second goal for us and played a nice ball to Devin (Talley) for the goal. Chloe had a great day, and she is just a great player."

On Picking Up a Third-Straight Clean Sheet: "I think we found a good combination between the four of them, and Mallory has made some nice saves to over that stretch. Credit all five of them really. They've been organized, they've done what we've asked them to do, and they defended pretty well."

What's Next
The Eagles travel to Southern Utah for their next match on Friday, Oct. 14 starting at 12 p.m. Pacific Time.
