Eagles Drop Match to Seattle University

After traveling to Seattle for a rescheduled game against the Redhawks, the Eagles fall on the road 3-0

SEATTLE, Wash.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team took on Seattle University today (Aug. 20) at Championship Field, after canceling yesterday's home match due to poor air quality. The Eagles were unable to come back with a win on the road after losing to the Redhawks 3-0.

"I put our group in a tough situation this weekend trying to get the game in with the conditions we had outside. I take responsibility for us not being prepared today, physically or mentally. We looked ourselves for about thirty minutes and then the wheels fell off," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "Credit to Seattle's players and coaches, as they took it to us for sixty minutes today. We will use it as a learning experience and get back to training tomorrow."

Eager to get the game rolling, the Eagles took the first two shots of the game against the Redhawks. EWU saw the first shot of the game from sophomore Emma Vanderhyden in the fourth minute of play. The corner kick from Vanderhyden went high and right, resulting in a missed chance for the Eagles. Junior Saige Lyons took her first shot of the match in the 13th minute of play with a header but it went wide and the game continued to sit at a 0-0 draw.

In the top of the 15th minute, Seattle U. saw their chance to attack and earned themselves a goal from junior Jessie Ray, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.

Trying to answer back to Seattle's first goal, redshirt junior Maia Innis took her second attempt of the game but the shot went wide.

The Redhawks saw another opportunity to score 20 minutes into the match with freshman Brianna Robles' shot but junior goalkeeper Hadley Bezon was there for the stop.

Senior Allison Raniere took her chance at a goal against the Redhawks with time winding down in the first half, but the shot ended up going right and the score maintained the same. Seattle U. took two more shots before the whistle blew and both teams returned to their locker rooms with the score of 1-0 Redhawks. The Eagles outshot the Redhawks seven to five in the first half.

In the 51st minute of play, Ray would score again for the Redhawks, giving them a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles found another chance when Vanderhyden set up the first corner kick of the second half, the fourth corner kick of the match, and found freshman Colby Wilson who sent her shot high. Seattle U. tried another attempt at a Redhawk goal but goalkeeper Bezon was there for the save.

With 10 minutes remaining, the Redhawks scored again on a header following a corner kick, extending Seattle's lead 3-0. After 90 minutes of play the Eagles ended with their first loss of the 2018 season, falling 3-0.
