CHENEY, Wash.—The Eastern Washington University soccer team played South Dakota to a 1-1 double overtime draw today (Aug. 24) at the EWU Soccer Field.
After today's game the Eagles are now 1-1-1 on the year. Eastern took 24 total shots in today's match but the lone goal of the game came from senior
Jenny Chavez in the 76th minute of play.
"There's a lot of bright spots that I take out of today for our group. We're trying to blend in a lot of young players that are playing a lot of minutes for us right now. The final piece is missing for us, and that's in front of goal and that's going to come for us. You don't continue to be unlucky in front of goal for the whole season," said head coach
Chad Bodnar. "The nice part was, our backline was solid and didn't give up much. There are a lot of positives, we'd like to get a win out of this, especially at home, but it is what it is and we'll keep building."
South Dakota junior Kellee Willer took the first shot of the game but it sailed left. The Eagles saw a few early chances for a goal by sophomores
Sariah Keister and
Emma Vanderhyden, as well as seniors
Devan Talley and
Alexis Stephenson, but they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
Both teams returned to their locker rooms at halftime with a 0-0 draw.
Eastern sophomore
McKaley Goffard took the first shot of the second half, but it was saved by South Dakota goalkeeper Parker Rytz, who had 11 saves on the day. The Coyotes had the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute of play from junior Amanda Carpio off of an assist from Willer to take a 1-0 lead.
Eastern took a flurry of corner kicks, but were not able to secure a goal off of one. In all, the Eagles took 12 on the day tying for second all-time in program history.
Twenty minutes later,
Allison Raniere would take a free kick near the top of the box and played it in towards net to the foot of Stephenson who tapped the ball for Chavez to net the equalizer, 1-1.
The goal was the 18th career goal for Chavez who now moves into third all-time in the EWU record book. Raniere's assist now places her in sole possession of third place overall with 14 assists, just three away from tying
Aimie Inthoulay in Eastern history.
With a 1-1 draw both teams headed into the first 10 minutes of overtime play. While both sides saw chances, the score remained the same resulting in a tie of 1-1.
Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington moves to 1-1-1 on the year, while USD ends up at 0-1-2. This is the third straight year the Eagles have faced the Coyotes. EWU now has a 2-0-1 overall record with USD.
Keys to the Game
Chavez was able to net the equalizer, and the Eagles were able to maintain possession of the ball over the Coyotes outshooting USD 24-6 with 12 shots on goal.
Notables
Eastern took 12 corner kicks in today's match, tying for second all-time in program history for corners in a single match, (vs. Evergreen State College, 9/16/11).

Bodnar Bites
On Netting the Equalizing Goal: "On Monday, we went down a goal against the run of play and then tanked it after that. Today we went down a goal and grabbed the game and didn't let that happen again. After that, we were in front of the goal for the next 15 to 20 minutes before we scored. The only negative I take away from that was that we kind of sagged off after that. It's a stepping stone, it's a long season, and for the result we'll take it and move forward."
On Outshooting South Dakota: "We had to make South Dakota make a lot of saves. It's not just the shots, we have to get quality shots and some today weren't quality. We did have some good chances; the goals are going to come. We have the players to do it and again, it's just something we have to keep building on."
On Facing Grambling State on Sunday: "Grambling State has an athletic group, more athletic than we saw today. At the end of the day, they have the same amount of turnaround time that we do. We'll have to use some depth to rest some tired legs, but that's the way that Division I soccer is. We'll get going and get a result."
