Undefeated for the First Time Since 2002, EWU Volleyball Sets Sights on UND Classic

Eastern Washington looks to continue its winning ways with four matches over three days in Grand Forks

CHENEY, Wash. – After a historic opening weekend, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team (3-0) is prepping for its second weekend of competition at the UND Classic this weekend (Aug. 30 – Sept. 1) in Grand Forks, N.D.
 
The Eagles open play against the hosts North Dakota on Thursday at 10 a.m. PT. Friday includes two matches, beginning with LA Tech at 8 a.m. and Western Carolina at 2:30 p.m. Classic play concludes on Saturday with a rematch against LA Tech at 8 a.m.

HOW TO WATCH: Only Eastern's match at North Dakota will be streamed and televised, with live stats provided at the same link for each match. No neutral site matches will be streamed. Fans can watch on TV on FOX Sports North or FOX College Sports Central. It will also be streamed on UND Insider for $2.95 for 24 hours or $4.95 for one month. Additionally, Eagle fans can watch on ESPN+ for $4.99 a month or online at FOX Sports GO with cable authentication.
 
GET TO KNOW YOUR EAGS: Eastern Washington is 3-0 for the first time since the 2002 season after winning the Titan Classic to open the year last weekend (Aug. 24-25).

Match Notes Week Two
They are one of only 72 undefeated teams in Division I.
 
Alexandra Espinosa leads Eastern with 44 kills (3.67/set) which ranks 98th in the nation and seventh in the Big Sky Conference. She also leads the Eagles with 133 total attacks which is 64th across Division I.
 
Sophomore Catelyn Linke leads Eastern and the Big Sky in service aces per set with .58 after totaling seven over the weekend. Her aces per set also places her 67th in the nation. Linke also leads the Eagles in digs with 55 to rank 75th nationally. She averages 4.58 digs per set which is 100th in the nation.
 
Samantha Boever racked up two double-doubles over the weekend. Her 115 (9.58/set) assists leads Eastern and ranks 66th in Division I. Sophomore Kamille Langford ranks 68th in the nation with 15 total blocks, averaging 1.25 per set.
 
As a team, the Eagles rank in the top-100 nationally in several statistical categories including: service aces per set (49th, 1.83), digs per set (40th, 17.42), total digs (41st, 209), total service aces (29th, 22), total attacks (61st, 450) and total blocks (86th, 26.0).
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles were crowned the Titan Classic champions after opening the weekend 3-0 with wins over UMass Lowell (3-0), Akron (3-1) and UC Riverside (3-1).
 
Eastern cruised to a three-set victory over UMass Lowell to open the season. The Eagles swung .351 with only three attack errors in the second set to help with the win. Freshman Kennedy Kaminsky led the Eagles in kills with 11 in her debut. MaKenna Davis led Eastern in digs with 14 and Samantha Boever had 35 assists.
 
Against Akron, Eastern dropped the second set but bounced back to take the match in four sets. They were led by Samantha Boever who turned in a double-double of 36 assists and 10 digs. Alexandra Espinosa led the team with a career-best of 15 kills.
 
EWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead against UC Riverside but dropped the next two sets before taking it in five. Three of the five sets were decided by two points. Alexandra Espinosa set a new best 21 kills and Catelyn Linke had a career-high 33 digs. Boever turned in another double-double with 44 assists and 16 digs.
 
GET TO KNOW NORTH DAKOTA: The Fighting Hawks are 1-3 on the young season with their lone win coming over Green Bay. They suffered losses to Rice, Texas Tech and TCU. UND returns three starters from a team that won the Big Sky Conference tournament and its second consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament after posting a record of 30-8.
 
Kayla Williams leads the Fighting Hawks with 3.71 kills per set and is swinging .216. She also averages 3.71 digs per set. Both lead The Summit League. As a team, UND averages 11.93 kills per set and hits at a .181 clip.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Eagles are familiar with the Fighting Hawks, as North Dakota just recently left the Big Sky Conference for The Summit League in July 2018. Eastern trails the all-time series, 1-11 and haven't beat UND since Sept. 24, 2015. They have dropped the last five matches against the Fighting Hawks and have never won in Grand Forks.
 
GET TO KNOW LA TECH: The Lady Techsters are 1-2 overall, with loses to UTRGV and Houston and a lone win over Prairie View A&M. Offensively, Carter Mirich leads the team with 2.11 kills per set, she also leads LTU with 20 digs. They return three starters from a squad that went 7-21 overall last season.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Friday marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs. Eastern owns the all-time series, 1-0 with a 3-0 neutral site victory on Aug. 25, 2006.
 
GET TO KNOW WESTERN CAROLINA: The Catamounts join Eastern Washington as one of only 72 undefeated teams in Division I and have only dropped one set in three matches. The wins came over Robert Morris, Charleston Southern and Middle Tennessee at the Catamount Classic.
 
Both MaKenzie White and Abigail Veit lead the team with 3.10 kills per set. Merry Gebel leads the team with 4.30 digs per set. As a team, they are swinging .233 and limiting their opponents to just a .187 hitting percentage. Sydney Carlson ranks second in the nation with 1.29 sevice aces per set.
 
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first meetings between Eastern Washington and Western Carolina. EWU is 4-0 all-time against programs from the Southern Conference.
 
HISTORIC START: The Eagles are 3-0 for the first time since 2002, tied for the fifth-best start in program history. In 2002, the Eagles started 20-0 and finished that season 29-2 and were crowned the Big Sky Conference Champions with a 13-1 conference record.
 
Leslie Flores-Cloud is the only coach in Eastern Washington volleyball history to start a season 3-0 in her inaugural season.
 
UP NEXT: The Eagles head East for their third of four tournaments. The Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina, takes place on Sept. 6-7. Competition begins with the hosts on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. before concluding against Charlotte and Gardner-Webb on Sept. 7.
